Patrols to deter antisocial behaviour in our parks

Operation Oxygen

Safer Basildon and the Council's Parks Team are supporting our partners, Essex Police with Operation Oxygen.

Following reports from members of the public about antisocial behaviour in our parks and open spaces, Billericay and Wickford Community Policing Team Officers are taking part in Operation Oxygen. This includes targeted patrols to deter and disrupt behaviours such as the use of nitrous oxide canisters, possession and use of cannabis, drinking of alcohol by under 18s and the use of vehicles to causing harassment.

With the recent gorgeous weather and lockdown rules, there are more people using our parks. Last weekend, Basildon Council cleared 2.9 tons of rubbish from Gloucester Park, Northlands Park, Lake Meadows, Wickford Memorial Park and Langdon Hills Recreation Ground.

We ask that everyone uses our parks responsibly and either bin your litter if possible or take it home with you so everyone can enjoy them.

Celebrating our community safety volunteers

Neighbourhood Watch
Volunteers Week

It’s Volunteers’ Week and a chance to celebrate and say thank you for the contribution thousands of volunteers make across the borough.

In community safety, there is a wide range of volunteering opportunities from Active Citizens, Special Constables and Neighbourhood Watch

Kathy McGowan volunteered to start a scheme in her road in Basildon and originally signed up 48 neighbours to join her.

There are around 220 Neighbourhood Watch schemes across the borough and it is people like Kathy that the success of the scheme relies on.

Kathy is very positive about the difference being a member has made: “Reducing crime, getting the community together and getting to know all my neighbours. Our road is a lot cleaner now and people are looking out for each other. It’s just nice having that community back together.”

NHS Test and Trace Service has launched

Test and trace

The Government has launched the NHS Test and Trace service. The service will help identify, contain and control coronavirus, reduce the spread of the virus and save lives.

Anyone who tests positive for coronavirus will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace and will need to share information about their recent interactions. This could include household members, people with whom they have been in direct contact, or within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes.

If you're contacted by the NHS Test and Trace service, you will not be asked to provide any passwords, bank account details or pin numbers.

Have you downloaded the what3words app?

What 3 words app

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging people to download what3words, a free smartphone app that helps you easily and accurately describe your location.

The app developers have broken the world down into trillions of 3m by 3m squares, each with a unique three-word address. These three words can then be used to pinpoint your location more accurately when sending emergency services to you.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has installed the what3words app on all of its tablets in fire engines to enable crews to get to the scene quickly.

The Service’s control room asks callers in remote locations if they have the app and if they don’t, the team encourages callers to quickly download the app.
