Welcome to Winter newsletter, where we will be sharing some useful information, including winter support, driving safely, mental health and more.
Winter support available to Barnsley's residents
Winter can cause additional pressures on households, especially with the continued rising cost of living.
As part of our More Money in Your Pocket campaign and to help residents relieve some of pressures, we have set up a webpage with information on some specific support that is available this winter to help you.
Drive safe this festive period
Our gritting team will continue to work over the festive period, working to keep Barnsley’s roads safe.
Here’s our top winter tips on how you can stay safe on the roads this winter:
- check the weather forecast before setting off
- allow extra time when travelling on our roads - the darker nights and colder temperatures can make it our harder to see
- if your walking or cycling, make sure you are visible

Helping those sleeping rough over the festive period
Our Housing Options team will be out and about over the festive period, continuing their work to make sure no one is sleeping rough in our borough.
Their dedicated team works closely with people who are homeless or sleeping rough, offering them the right support and advice. If you come across anyone sleeping rough this winter, please let us know so we can help them and make sure they’re safe.
By sharing information with us through StreetLink, our teams will be able to go out and help.

Christmas can be a stressful and challenging time for many of us, especially when it comes to our mental health. You might be feeling lonely, anxious, overwhelmed, or low. Whatever you're going through, you don't have to suffer in silence. There are people who care and want to help you.
The charity Mind has some great advice on how to cope with the festive season and look after your wellbeing. You can also find out how to support someone else who might be struggling. Check out the Mind website for more information.
If you feel you need someone to talk to, the 24-hour mental health helpline are always on hand to listen, this includes over the Christmas period, you can call them on 0800 183 0558. You can also find lots of mental health support services in Barnsley on our #AlrightPal webpage. Remember, it's okay to not be okay.
