Over 1,000 kids attend RLWC match for free

Over 1,000 children received free tickets for the Rugby World Cup warm-up game between Cumbria Rugby League and Rugby World Cup entrants, Jamaica at Derwent Park, Workington on Friday 7 October.

To provide local children with the opportunity to take part in the event, Allerdale Borough Council gave a grant of £5,000 to Workington Town Rugby League Club to fund free tickets for kids to the match.

The tickets were distributed to local sports teams, community clubs and local schools prior to the event, but were also made available to children on the night.

The total number of tickets provided to local children was 1,066.

The total overall attendance of the match was 3,178.

Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, Councillor Mike Johnson, said: “It’s fantastic to hear how brilliant the turnout for Friday night’s game was at Derwent Park, and I’m also delighted to hear that over 1,000 children benefited from the free tickets initiative.

“For some of the youngsters, the match will have been their first taste of international rugby league in the county, and fans came to enjoy the event from all over Cumbria and beyond – so it’s a real added bonus that the Cumbria team got the win on the night!”

Director of Workington Town, Graeme Peers, said: “The whole of Cumbria got behind the game with ticket sale locations proving strong outside Allerdale too. As hosts, it was a Friday night under lights to remember and a positive outcome to what has been a difficult period for everyone at the club.

“We would like to thank Whitehaven RLFC and Barrow Raiders for their support in an organisational capacity and through coordinated social media campaigns alongside our media team that helped bring the game into the public eye.”

“The sport of Rugby League and Workington Town proved we can flourish when given the opportunity and we'd like to thank Allerdale Borough Council, our staff and volunteers who ensured the game was a huge success. Lastly, I'd like to thank everyone connected to Jamaica Rugby League for their conduct and company whilst being our guests, a superb group of people who will be forever welcome in our Town, Borough, and County.”

New dog fouling signage

Dog fouling signage

As the nights draw in, we tend to see a rise in dog fouling reports as people think they won’t be seen not picking up after their dog.

Whilst we continue our enforcement patrols in key areas, we’ve also started to install new glow in the dark signage – so people can’t use the excuse they couldn’t see any signs. Keep an eye out and see if you spot one.

  • £650 Cost of Living payment for most people on means-tested benefits, the first (£326) has been paid and the second (£324) will be received in November.
  • £300 Pensioner Cost of Living payment that will be paid with Winter Fuel Payments to all pensioner households across the UK.

Council Leaders submit bid for Cumbrian Investment Zones

Council Leaders have taken the next steps towards securing Investment Zones in Cumbria by submitting an Expressions of Interest bid to Government.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities is inviting places to put forward sites for inclusion in their Investment Zones programme in England as part of their ‘Growth Plan 2022’ which was launched on 23 September in a bid to unlock economic growth and speed up development.

These zones could benefit from a variety of tax incentives, regulatory innovations and planning flexibilities within specific site boundaries.

Cumbria is one of 38 areas in the country that has been identified as a potentially suitable location to establish the new Investment Zones. The sites that are now being put forward for consideration in Cumbria are:

Cumberland:

  • Land at Oldside and Port of Workington
  • Land at Kingmoor Park Enterprise Zone, Carlisle
  • Land at Leconfield Industrial Estate, Cleator Moor

Westmorland:

  • Land at Barrow Waterfront, Barrow Port and Barrow Waterside
  • Land at GSK, Ulverston
  • Land at Junction 41 (Inspiring Eden)

The Expression of Interest will now be subject to assessment by the Government who will confirm which sites they wish to take forward to the next stage for development of an Investment Zone delivery plan.

Reacting to the news Cllr Mike Johnson, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: "I welcome the news that Workington is included in the submission to government to be considered as a location for an Investment Zone. In the last few years Allerdale Borough Council has secured millions of pounds worth of investment for the Allerdale area, with some £25m secured for Workington alone under the Town Deal.

If successful, these proposals will hopefully build upon our work aimed at making the area an even more attractive place for businesses to invest and grow."

Meetings this week and next

Our Executive met this week and agreed the quarterly Finance Report.

Speaking on the report, Council Leader, Cllr Mike Johnson said:

"This report shows that we have continued to invest in our community and continued to provide the excellent services that our residents expect from us.

The last few years have undoubtedly been a challenging period of time, and yet despite the additional demands of local government reorganisation, it is clear from the report that we have not taken our foot off the gas, and that we have continued to invest in our services and the local area.

One highlight for me in these three months, is the £150 Energy Rebate Scheme which our teams have delivered to 53,000 families across Allerdale. This was no mean feat, and to successfully administer this scheme and deliver such great performance in our day-to-day work is testament to the hard work of this council. I’d like to thank all the officers and fellow councillors for their hard work.

I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in the final year of Allerdale. Our achievements will lay a foundation of success for the new Cumberland Council to build on."

The Overview and Scrutiny Committee met this week too.

You can see all agendas on our website.

There are no Allerdale meetings next week, but there is a Shadow Authority for Cumberland Council meeting which includes consideration of the Council Plan. You can see more details on this and other items on the agenda, including two motions, at: Agenda for Shadow Authority for Cumberland Council on Tuesday, 18th October, 2022, 10.30 am | Shadow Authority for Cumberland Council (moderngov.co.uk)
