Another sell-out weekend for Taste Cumbria!
A star-studded cast, traders reporting their best sales yet, and streets packed with smiling visitors – it really was another great Taste Cumbria festival in Cockermouth.
The event is attracting so much attention it’s going to appear in a new BBC2 series due to be screened next year. With the working title of The Great British Food Festival, the show is fronted by TV and radio broadcaster and presenters Edith Bowman (left in the photo bottom right) and Colin Murray, alongside Sean Fletcher (right in the same photo) who is a regular face on Countryfile.
Edith and Sean were filming in Cockermouth over the festival weekend with Taste Cumbria regulars Andy Walsh of The Coffee Kitchen Bakery and Tony Harrison of Harrison’s Butchers, alongside Irini Tzortzoglou, the MasterChef winner, who was appearing on the festival’s demonstration stage.
Edith Bowman said: “I grew up in a hotel so food has always been part of my DNA. I’m incredibly excited to explore different part of the UK to celebrate the food we produce.”
Sean Fletcher added: “Food and the way it is made, from farm to fork or picker to producer, has always been a passion of mine. It must be obvious because I tend to be given the food assignments on TV shows!”
They weren’t the only stars in town for the weekend. Wordsworth House & Garden hosted a Q&A with famed food writer Grace Dent (middle in the photo on the bottom right) and BBC Radio Cumbria’s Mike Zeller, with The New Bookshop selling out of her books afterwards. There was also a quiz night with stand up comedian and BBC broadcaster Steffen Peddie, and a Supper Club with Alec Anderson from West Cumbria-based Takeaway@Home who cooked a locally-sourced feast at Cockermouth Cricket Club.
Don’t forget there is one more festival this year - Taste Cumbria Christmas in Cockermouth on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December 2022. For more information, email ellie.jones@allerdale.gov.uk or call 01900 702969.

Lucky winner selected for ‘Perfect Day’ in Allerdale
This summer, Allerdale Borough Council held a competition inviting people to tell us about and potentially win their ‘Perfect Day’ in Allerdale.
The team at Visit Allerdale – part of Allerdale Borough Council – partnered up with the competition sponsors Alp Kit, Newlands Adventure, Lakes Escapes, Leathes Head Hotel, Tithe Barn, The Bank of Silloth, and Solway Cycle Hire to provide a fantastic prize for one lucky person and their friend.
The submission process for this year’s Perfect Day in Allerdale competition differed from that of the previous two years. To enter the competition, entrants were asked to post a piece of creative writing about Allerdale, an image, a video, or their own artwork of their favourite place in Allerdale on Facebook or Instagram. The entry could have been a piece of creative writing about Keswick, an image of Cockermouth Main Street, a time-lapse video of Silloth Green, or a piece of artwork featuring Maryport harbour.
The deadline of 5 September for competition entries has now passed and the team at Visit Allerdale have carefully reviewed this year’s entries to select a winner. Having reviewed a series of fantastic artwork, creative writing, videos and images, the team have selected this year’s winner and four lucky runners up.
This year’s winner of the Perfect Day competition is Kathy George. Kathy’s winning entry was a reel she posted on Instagram which detailed all of her favourite places in Allerdale accompanied by the well-known Fairground Attraction song, ‘Perfect’.
Kathy’s ‘Perfect Day’ will be filmed by professionals and a short film will be posted on the Visit Allerdale website to inspire others and showcase what the area has to offer visitors.

Allerdale Local Focus Hub successfully deliver four community engagement events across Allerdale
Allerdale Local Focus Hub partners joined forces to deliver four community day events across Allerdale as part of an ongoing multi-agency collaboration known as Operation Respect.
The Allerdale Local Focus Hub is a partnership between various organisations such as Cumbria Police, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, Family Action, Cumbria County Council, and local housing associations, Riverside, Home Group, Westfield and Castles and Coasts.
The events were held at the following locations:
-
Hillside, Maryport – led by Castles and Coasts Housing Association
-
The Oval Community Centre, Salterbeck – led by Riverside
-
Greenacres, Wigton – led by Home Group
-
Windsor Road, Workington – led by Westfield Housing
Representatives from housing associations were on hand at each of the events to provide advice and guidance surrounding housing, homelessness, and financial advice. In addition to this, those who attended the events had the opportunity to discuss how they could access financial support and budgeting advice.
The housing associations provided skips at each of the events to enable residents to dispose of bulky items they were struggling to get rid of, such as sofas, garden furniture and mattresses.
Representatives from the partnership litter-picked at each of the events, collecting numerous bags of rubbish – creating a cleaner, greener environment for those living in the area.
At each event, representatives from Allerdale Waste Services and Tivoli were also on hand to help residents dispose of household waste and bulky items.
There was also a focus on food and fuel hardship at all of four of the community days.
Representatives from the Hub and Cumbria County Council’s Healthy Start programme issued 50 families with free children’s vitamins and provided further information about how families can benefit further from the programme. In addition to this, 13 women benefitted from the free vitamins initiative across all four events.

Use the MiPermit app to pay for parking
Use the MiPermit app to pay for parking. It can be used in most of our car parks - just download the app, and once you're all set-up you just pay when you arrive. No more queuing at the machine, or scrabbling around for change. And if you need more time for more shopping or that extra coffee, just use the app - it can even remind you when your time is due to expire, how much you can expect to pay, and help you find the nearest car park.
