Raise the roof like a Viking!
'You can't be real Viking until you have worked on a long house'
Modern-day Vikings are being sought for a series of weekend workshops that will see an 18-metre longhouse built just a few miles from the A66 in Cumbria.
David Watson of Moorforge has started the works on the new 18-metre longhouse and is now filling places on his weekend courses.
Moorforge now hosts training weekends for Viking reenactors, has regular historical cooking courses and welcomes school children to its education days, which are delivered by trained teacher and historical interpreter Terry Harvey-Chadwick.
The construction of the longhouse will be run as a series of round timber framing courses with group sizes of up to 8 people, which costs £180 per person. Participants will camp on site with food and drinks included, as well as a Saturday night by the fire with a beer in the existing longhouse. The participants will learn enough skills to build their very own round timber frame building.
All profits will be used to purchase the planking to clad the finished frame and anyone who attends will be invited to a weekend ‘topping out’ party once the new longhouse is weather tight.
If you’re looking for a unique experience helping to create a building which will be of use to all who visit Moorforge for years to come, please email: davidwatson078@gmail.com
