Budding bakers and crafty cooks are invited to show off their skills in the newest attraction at the Taste Cumbria festivals – the Cake Off competition!

The contest is open to all amateur cakemakers, regardless of age or experience. All the judges are looking for is an appetising creation that tastes amazing.

The first Cake Off competition takes place at the Taste of Wigton festival which takes place in the lovely market town on Saturday 23 April 2022. There’s no charge and bakers can enter as many cakes as they like – though they do need to fill in an entry form for each piece they produce. There are no different categories – it will be a blind tasting for the judges.

Ellie Jones, Taste Cumbria event manager, said: “I cannot wait to see what people create for our first ever Cake Off!

“We’ve had people clamouring to be on the judging panel for this, and who can blame them? As much cake as they can eat at one of our festivals – sounds like a great day out to me. I’m really pleased that we have recruited three fabulous chefs, including Fell Foodie aka Harrison Ward, the local lad who has turned the fells into his kitchen, to head up the judging panel at Taste of Wigton. He’ll also be showing off his skills on the Taste Cumbria demo stage here so every visitor will be able to pick up some great tips.

“The only Cake Off rule is that the cake must not be shop bought. If you want to whip up something from scratch or use an icing kit or whatever, that’s fine – we think there’s enough room for error on every cake, no matter how many times someone has made it!

“Get your entries in, drop your cakes off on the day at the festival Info Point, and then head out to enjoy the festival. We’ll announce the winners later that day.

“Good luck!”

Cakes will need to be dropped off at  the Taste of Wigton event information point before 2pm on Saturday 23 April 2022.

Taste Cumbria (2) heading

Four festivals, three towns – tuck in to some fabulous Taste Cumbria food festivals.

The events will have everything you’ve come to expect from Taste Cumbria – big producers’ markets, experts to chat to, food and drink to eat on the spot, children’s entertainment, live music and more.

Nearly everything at the Taste Cumbria festivals is free to enjoy. A small number of events are ticketed and we’re keeping a close check on coronavirus restrictions to ensure these are planned in line with the very latest guidelines.

Cockermouth’s festival in September is now a firm fixture in every food fan’s calendar, while we’ll be building on the success of the new Maryport and Wigton events which began in 2021. Then it’s back to Cockermouth for the Christmas markets in December.

Watch this space for more information. We’ll be making more announcements soon.
