Heron Foods Shopfront

Heron Foods - Part of the Shopfronts Grant Scheme

We are so pleased to see some of our work starting to make a real difference to Maryport.

Allerdale Borough Council is running the Shopfront Grant Scheme (SGS) in the town which aims to replace and restore the town's historic shopfronts within the Maryport Conservation Area.

The Council plans to restore shopfronts while encouraging local business owners to apply for the grant scheme so they can create an attractive town centre.

Improvements to shopfronts in Maryport will be carefully designed with outlined principles to be adhered to in order to be respectful of the town's appearance.

Heron foods has now been completed and reflects the character of the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian time period. As you can see the revival of the architecture style vastly improves Maryport's conservation area.

Grant scheme available to help restore eligible Maryport buildings for residential purposes

Maryport residential conversion map

Allerdale Borough Council is encouraging owners of eligible properties in the centre of Maryport to make use of a new grant scheme that will enable them to restore unoccupied flats and unused spaces above shops.

The Maryport Residential Conversion Scheme (MRCS), launched on 21 March 2022, aims to help the owners of eligible properties carry out high-quality repair and restoration works that bring unoccupied first floor (or above) floorspace into use for residential purposes.

Grants will be offered to owners of eligible properties to help cover the cost of approved renovation works. Based on the maximum grant available per property, a minimum of 15 properties will be brought back into use for residential purposes as a result of the scheme.

Properties eligible to make an application for funding must be located within the MRCS area, which covers sections of Senhouse Street, Crosby Street and Curzon Street, with the full map available on the council’s website.

Typically, grant funding will be offered at a rate of 80% of eligible costs, however, each application will be assessed on its own merits and significance, with all offers of grant assistance made at the discretion of Allerdale Borough Council.

The maximum grant available for any eligible property is £75,000.

To apply for the scheme, applicants are advised to check the eligibility criteria in full and apply before midnight on Sunday 1 May. Anyone with questions about the scheme should contact joe.broomfield@allerdale.gov.uk.

Rare cine film archive reveals Maryport's past

maryport cine film still

A secret collection of films which has been hidden away for decades has been unexpectedly revealed as part of an art project in Maryport.

The reels were discovered after Cumbrian filmmaker John Hamlett was commissioned by Allerdale Borough Council to produce an oral history film capturing memories of Maryport’s town centre and shops in the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. It is part of the Maryport Heritage Action Zone project, a £1.2 million scheme funded by Historic England to reinvigorate the town’s high street.

It was while John was interviewing local residents that one suddenly suggested he might like to take a look at some old family cine films, shot in the 1930s. At first glance, John realised he had discovered a glorious journey into West Cumbria’s past.

Showing the drama of Maryport’s coastline and the carnivals, shopping and family fun of the past, the films are a fabulous trip back in time. There are also films capturing the thrills and spills of a day out at Workington Speedway and the adrenaline-fuelled races at Braithwaite sports.

Working with the digital footage, John has now edited eight different short films that have been shared online on the council’s YouTube channel.

In addition, an hour-long edited oral-history heritage film will paint a vivid picture of Maryport’s past, illustrated with photographs, maps and old film. This will be available to view in the coming months.

A date for the diary

Taste Cumbria (2) heading

Maryport is welcoming back its second Taste Cumbria festival on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August 2022.

We brought a Taste of the Sea festival to the town for the first time last year and it was fantastic to see the streets packed with visitors. The harbourside also made the perfect location for a picnic area and festival bar.

Here’s a sample of the festival line-up – all of this is FREE to attend and ticketed events will be revealed closer to the time.

  • Producers’ Market on Senhouse Street
  • Outdoor picnic area with live music all weekend
  • Cookery demonstrations with some great local chefs
  • Hot food stalls
  • Festival bar
  • Fairground rides
  • Children’s activities with Rainbow Wishes Foundation

Trader pitches are still available for the Producers’ Market and hot food court. For more information, email ellie.jones@allerdale.gov.uk. Priority will be given to Allerdale and other Cumbrian producers but we welcome enquiries from other areas. To submit your application for this event, please click on the booking form here.
