More action on fly-tipping in the local area
We are committed to a cleaner and greener Allerdale which is why we do what we can to tackle fly-tipping and other environmental issues.
Therefore the Enforcement Team are running an operation in and around Workington to tackle issues that are frequently reported throughout the area, such as fly tipping in town’s back lanes, trade waste left by bins within the town centre, and dog fouling.
The enforcement team also continue to patrol throughout Allerdale and during one of their checks they caught two men disposing of trade waste at the recycling bring site which is situated on Sullart Street, Cockermouth. The owner of the van being used had no waste carriers licence. The other person was a local business owner disposing of their business waste. Both of them have been issued with fixed penalties to the combined value of £1,400.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind our residents and business owners that they have a duty of care in relation to their waste. Recycling bring sites are not designed for business use, but rather for use by residents with excess recycling only. If someone is found to have met the fly tipping criteria, they will be subjected to a warning or to a fixed penalty of up to £400.
We can help businesses understand their legal duties and have the proper arrangements in place to dispose of their waste.
For more information of how to correctly dispose of your waste visit our website.

As part of a seven-day national crackdown on metal crime and cash-based money laundering in the waste industry, officers from a collective of local organisations visited a number of permitted waste and scrap metal sites in Allerdale, in a bid to tackle illegal waste activity.
Operation Respect saw a week of action from officers at Cumbria Police, British Transport Police, Allerdale Borough Council and the Environment Agency, who worked in partnership to carry out inspections at a number of permitted waste sites. Officers searched for stolen metal, reviewed financial records and checked operators were complying with the conditions of their permits and the 2013 Scrap Metal Dealers Act.
Officers found the majority of permitted waste sites in Allerdale are operating legally, but discovered an illegal waste site and a stolen vehicle, which are now under investigation.

Don't forget about your garden waste collections
A friendly reminder that the garden waste collections are back.
Garden waste bins can be used for all green waste such as leaves, branches, grass, flowers and plants. Residents are asked not to put household waste or recycling, soil, rubble, concrete or flower pots and trays in the bins, and to shake off as much soil from plants and roots as possible.
Collections returned on the weeks beginning on the 7th March 2022, or 14th March 2022, depending on which round the household was on. Collections are on a fortnightly basis.
Garden waste can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres in Maryport, Wigton and Workington as well as other sites in Cumbria. More information can be found at: Household Waste Recycling Centres | Cumbria County Council

Wasting food feeds climate change
Household food waste is responsible for nearly twenty five million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The majority is food that could have been eaten.
Love Food Hate Waste is a campaign which we have supported and with the aim to reduce waste and raise awareness about being food savvy. For practical tips on how to reduce food in our homes go to the Love Food Hate Waste website:
