Organisations that registered included limited companies, sole traders, registered charities and partnerships, and covered a range of sectors including Education, Food Production, Hospitality and leisure, Retail, Transport, Arts and Religion.

Covid-19 grant scheme for businesses in Allerdale relaunched

ARG Relaunched

We are encouraging eligible local businesses to apply for a new version of a government-backed grant made available to those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

A relaunched Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) became available from Monday, October 18th for eligible businesses who can demonstrate that Covid-19 restrictions and regulations reduced their turnover in the financial year 2020/21 compared to 2019/20.

This is the third time the ARG scheme has been in operation since the start of the pandemic and is open to businesses who have not made an application for, or have not received, a grant through any earlier Covid business grant schemes administered by Allerdale Borough Council. Businesses must have traded throughout the financial years 2019/20 and 2020/21.

Grants of between £2,000 and £10,000 may be available to eligible businesses depending on how much their turnover has been affected.

The ARG funding is to support those businesses who have been severely impacted by restrictions and were not eligible for any of the previous Covid business support grants administered by Allerdale Borough Council.

The last date for receipt of applications for this final round grant scheme is 12pm on Friday, 12 November, 2021. To apply, and see a full description of the eligibility criteria, should  visit our website here:

Cockermouth School students successful short film

Great to read in the News & Star that a  young West Cumbrian couple are celebrating after one of their short films has been nominated for an award in America. Jack Berry, a horror filmmaker from Blindcrake who went to Cockermouth School and his girlfriend, Gwyneth Rhianwen, who is an actress from Pardshaw (also an ex-Cockermouth School student), have collaborated on several short films.

The short film is a 3 minute psychological thriller, shot in Cumbria. It screened at a British film festival in New York which is sponsored by Fangoria, one of the largest horror and cult film magazines in the world. Read the full story of success in the News & Star and you can check out Jack and Gwyneth's short films on their YouTube Channel Bewitched Productions

Welcoming back Keswick's Alhambra

Great to see the Keswick Alhambra back open.
Following major transformation, the Alhambra Cinema reopened on Friday 15 October.

When cinemas were allowed to reopen in May, after Covid restrictions were eased, the owners of the 108 year old Alhambra decided to stay shut and build a second screen room.

The owners celebrated the reopening with  contractors and a volunteer army who've created Screen 2, renovated the facade, refurbished, redecorated and painted.

Just look at those cinema reel lights!
