Gearing up to offer a warm welcome to visitors as well as support our communities

As the school holidays begin, the Lake District National Park Authority is gearing up to offer a warm welcome to visitors and provide support for communities in what looks set to be the busiest summer on record.

The National Park Authority, working alongside a range of local partners including Cumbria Tourism, landowners and ourselves, has taken the following steps to make sure that people can get the most out of their time in the Lake District:

  • Provided more temporary car parks in key locations
  • Improved parking and camping signage throughout the park.
  • Expanded the successful multi agency patrol team to include area specific staff
  • Enlisted the help of more visitor welcome volunteers
  • Will continue real time parking information on SaferLakes to help visitors plan their day
  • More litter patrols and new litter picking stations
  • Additional temporary toilet facilities at Keswick, Bowness, Wasdale and Buttermere
  • Increased lake ranger patrols to keep people safe in and on the water
  • New free shuttle bus from Cockermouth to Buttermere
  • Promoting other park and ride initiatives like Keswick park and sail and an e-bike hire pilot.

There are now 140 specialist Visitor Welcome Volunteers who will be at key locations throughout the park to be able to give help and advice for first time visitors or those looking to discover a new special place in the Lake District.

All aboard the free Buttermere bus

A free daily shuttlebus has been launched between Cockermouth and Buttermere, to help get people out of their cars and ease the pressure on Cumbria’s rural road network during the busy school summer holiday period.

Operated by Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire, the trial service has been funded by Cumbria’s Tactical Visitor Management Group, to reduce the volume of cars heading to the popular Buttermere Valley by providing a wider range of transport options for families to enjoy.

The 16-seater shuttlebus will do five daily return journeys between Cockermouth, Low Lorton and Buttermere Village, with the first bus departing from Main Street in Cockermouth at 9.30am everyday until Sunday 5 September.

As well as providing easy access to the scenic round-the-lake-route at Buttermere, the new service connects to Cumbria’s wider bus network, including the hourly X4/5 to Workington and the 77/77A, which runs between Buttermere and Keswick.

The free summer service has been made possible thanks to support from the Tactical Visitor Management Group, which includes a wide range of partners such as Cumbria Police, the local authorities, the Lake District National Park and Cumbria Tourism.

The new Buttermere shuttlebus is also dog-friendly vehicle and has space for one wheelchair.

Full details of the timetable are available on the Lake District National Park website.

Be safe in the water

Water safety

This fantastic weather we are having means that many people are taking to our lakes and rivers to cool off.

However, please do take care in the water. To find out more, go to the Cumbria County Council website.

Remember:

  • Before you jump in a river, lake or any waters stop and think.
  • Hazards lie beneath the water and even if the sun is shining, the water will still be cold.
  • If you see someone in trouble in water, do not hesitate, call 999 immediately with clear details of your location.
