£11.5 million regeneration funding agreed

We've finally had confirmation that our submission to the Government's Future High Streets Fund for Maryport has been approved - meaning £11.5 million has been awarded to the town.

The projects are part of the bid include:

  • Revamping Christ Church
  • Bringing The Carlton back into use
  • Improving The Wave Centre

The projects form part of the our wider Maryport Regeneration programme, which also includes the successful £1.2m Heritage Action Zone scheme which will focus on using the town's history as a catalyst for transformation.

Council leader Mike Johnson said: "I very much welcome the final confirmation from MHCLG of the future high streets funding agreement. I know a lot of work has gone in to finalise the bid and I'd like to thank both the officers at Allerdale, our colleagues at MHCLG, as well as members of the community, for all their time and efforts.

"Now we can get on with the projects that will transform Maryport and make it an even better town to live in, work and visit."

Coronavirus cases rise in Cumbria

Colin Cox

There were 41 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in Cumbria in week ending 14 May, up from 21 the previous week, but the infection rate (8/100k) remains well below the national (21/100k) and regional (37/100k) averages. In the same time period there were 4 cases recorded in Allerdale.

Most recent data published on 20 May shows 73 per cent of the adult Cumbrian population have now received their first vaccine dose.

Colin Cox, Cumbria’s Director of Public Health, said:

“Infections have doubled in the last week and that obviously causes us to stop and think, but at this stage we are not overly concerned. Our infection rate remains very low and we are not seeing any evidence in more recent provisional data that we are experiencing a continued increase.

“There has been a lot of interest in the new variant of the covid virus that is responsible for ongoing outbreaks elsewhere in the north west and we have seen a small number of cases here in Cumbria, but these have been effectively isolated so far.

“I still want to stress that while we have nearly 30% of our population unvaccinated we need to take care - hands, face, space, fresh air really do make a difference - although I appreciate the wet and cold May we are having is making the fresh air part more of a challenge!”

Market charter anniversary celebrated

Cockermouth market charter

The 800th anniversary of a market charter being granted to Cockermouth has been celebrated during a special ceremony this week.

It was on 19th May 1221, King Henry III granted the Manor of Cockermouth a charter to hold a Saturday market and later in the same year - on 20th November - a revised charter was issued for a Monday market.

To celebrate the historic milestone, the Cockermouth Civic Trust organised an event whereby the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Claire Hensman, representing the Crown, ceremonially handed over the market charter to the town once again. The charter – which is now officially held by Allerdale Borough Council - was handed to Cockermouth’s mayor and town councillor Julie Laidlow in Market Place after the town crier rang the market bell.
