Results of the recent elections in Allerdale

Peter McCall elected as Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner

The result of the Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner election was formally announced on Monday 10 May, with the Conservative Party candidate, Peter McCall, winning the contest. He gained 53.57% of the first preference votes meaning a count of second preference votes was not required. 

The results were announced in Workington, by the Police Area Returning Officer, Andrew Seekings. The election was held on 6 May 2021.

Overall turn-out for the election was just over 27%, across the county as well as in Allerdale.

Allerdale Borough Council election results

Elections

Last Friday, the count for the local government by-elections took place in Workington Leisure Centre. The winners of the five borough council seats were as follows:

  • Aspatria ward: Kevin Thurlow (Independent)
  • Cockermouth Christchurch ward: Alan Kennon (Conservative)
  • Ellen and Gilcrux ward: Patrick Gorrill (Conservative)
  • Seaton and Northside ward: Colin Sharpe (Conservative)
  • Workington St John's ward: Antony David McGuckin (Labour)

Cumbria County Council election results

Elections were also held for two seats on Cumbria County Council in the Allerdale area. Both seats were gained by the Conservative Party candidates. They were:

  • St John's and Great Clifton division: Debbie Barbara Garton (Conservative)
  • Cockermouth North division: Catherine Mabel Bell (Conservative)

Workington Town Council election results

And four seats in three wards on Workington Town Council were also contested on 6 May 2021. Those elected were:

  • Salterbeck ward: Ellie Wood (Labour Party)
  • St John's ward (2 seats): Antony David McGuckin (Labour Party) and Patricia Marie Poole (Independent)
  • Stainburn ward: Jacqueline Diane Kirkbride (Conservative Party)

Cat at polling station

It's become traditional to post pictures on social media of dogs at polling stations.

But our colleagues at a polling station in Cockermouth were joined by a friendly cat who had followed their owner to the polling booth.
