May 6 elections: Are you ready to have your say?
With less than a week left until voters in Allerdale go to the polls on 6 May, we are urging voters to get ready to vote.
Across Allerdale there are Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner elections, and some local government by-elections, taking place.
Polling stations will be safe places to vote on 6 May. People voting in person are encouraged to keep themselves and others safe by:
- wearing a face covering
- bringing their own pen or pencil
- cleaning their hands when entering and leaving the polling station
- keeping a safe distance
Voters should not attend the polling station if they have symptoms of Covid-19, or if they have been asked to self-isolate.
Anyone who develops symptoms, or is asked to self-isolate shortly before polling day, has up to 5pm on polling day to apply for an emergency proxy vote.
This allows them to nominate someone they trust to vote on their behalf. And if a voter already has a proxy in place and their proxy has to self-isolate, they can nominate a new proxy up until 5pm on 6 May.
Irresponsible dog owners beware!
Our enforcement officers are out and about across Allerdale each day and take a zero-tolerance approach to people who fail to clean up after their dog.
This week, one of their patrols has been in Allonby where they've taken the opportunity to lay down some new stencils on the cycle/foot path.
We know that most people always pick up their dog’s poo. However, as some don’t it’s important we know about incidents so we can keep our communities clean.

Consultation on speed limit changes
Following a review of speed limits within Allerdale, Cumbria County Council is launching a consultation from Friday 30 April until Friday 21 May, to gather feedback and views on proposals to change speed limits in three separate locations in Allerdale.
The changes which are being proposed are as follows:
A596 Micklethwaite
The proposed changes are to introduce a 40mph speed limit through Micklethwaite on the A596.
This proposal comes as a result of an independent Engineering Safety Study carried out along the A596 Micklethwaite. The study indicated that a reduction in speed limit would help to prevent accidents and collisions from occurring as frequently.
A594 Dovenby
The proposed changes are to reduce part of the existing 50mph speed limit to 40mph, through the village of Dovenby. This proposal also comes as a result of an independent Engineering Safety Study carried out along the A594 Dovenby, which found that a reduction in speed limit would help to prevent accidents and collisions.
C2065 Low Road, Brigham
The proposed changes are to extend the existing 30mph speed limit from its intersection with School Brow in a north-easterly direction to a point adjacent to St Bridget’s Church. The proposed speed limit reduction is intended to provide a safer walking route to school for pupils attending from the new St Bridget’s Close estate and Low Road.
The survey has been sent by post to residents in the affected areas. The survey can also be taken online by clicking below, and further information is available via the council website.
Fire service warn of extreme risk of wildfires
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) is urging people who live within or who are planning to visit the Lake District or rural environments to do so safely and with extra caution.
Wildfires have the potential to burn for days and devastate vast areas of land and wildlife. If they get out of control, they can threaten the welfare of nearby communities too.
In the past weekend, Cumbria FRS have responded to two separate wildfire incidents: one at Whinlatter Forest, Keswick and one at Thirlmere Reservoir.
Dry ground in the summer means there's an added risk of a fire starting, but you should take care at all times of the year. Follow these tips to reduce the chance of a wildfire in the countryside:
- Extinguish cigarettes properly and don't throw cigarette ends on the ground - take your litter home.
- Never throw cigarette ends out of car windows.
- Avoid using open fires in the countryside.
- Don't leave bottles or glass in woodland - sunlight shining through glass can start fires (take them home and recycle them).
- Only use barbecues in a suitable and safe area and never leave them unattended.
- If you see a fire in the countryside, report it to the fire and rescue service immediately.
With the warmer weather and the increased numbers of people visiting the countryside creates a greater risk of fire. Help Cumbria FRS keep Cumbria safe.
Stay up to date and follow our outdoor fire safety advice: https://www.cumbria.gov.uk/cumbriafire/safetyoutdoors/default.asp
