Latest coronavirus situation in Cumbria and Allerdale
Cumbria recorded a further 27% drop in new COVID-19 cases in the week ending 12 March, down from 186 to 136. All of the counties six districts had infection rates below the national average. There was also positive news for hospitals with new COVID-19 admissions dropping by half in the north and south of the county. Deaths also continued to decrease.
The most recent published data also show 189,000 Cumbrians have now received their first vaccination dose, slightly above the national average.
The number of COVID-19 tests being recorded almost tripled to nearly 85,0000, mainly as a result of Lateral Flow testing now underway in schools.

Keeping our streets clean
Our street scene team have had a really successful week cleaning up back lanes in Workington again.
Their focus was on Winifred Street which saw flytipping and other waste removed and the back lane cleaned up, with the help of colleagues from Tivoli Services. The team has also been speaking to residents about how to dispose of waste and how to report flytipping.
And two people have lighter wallets this week, thanks to fines issued by the team - one for dog fouling (the excuse was they didn't have a bag) and the other for fly-tipping.
Click the link below to report such issues to us. We're committed to doing what we can to keep our area clean.

Help and advice for you on the elections in May
On Thursday 6 May 2021 residents in Allerdale will go to the polls to have their say on who represents them in Police and Crime Commissioner and local by-elections, and we are making plans to help electors stay safe while casting their vote.
Elections will be held in Allerdale for the Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, as well as five vacant borough council seats, two vacant Cumbria County Council seats and four seats on Workington Town Council.
There are a number of ways to vote in the elections in May – by post, in a polling station, or by appointing someone you trust to vote on your behalf, which is known as a proxy vote.
Full details on the elections being held on 6 May, and more information on how to apply for a postal or proxy vote ahead of the deadlines in April, can be found on our website: https://www.allerdale.gov.uk/en/elections/elections-may-2021/
The page also includes information on registering to vote if you need to do this.

Hemlock Water Hogwart
The picture on the right is believed to be of Hemlock Water Hogwart roots (or ‘dead man’s fingers’). These innocuous looking roots are actually very poisonous to animals and humans and this particular specimen washed up on Allonby beach earlier in the week. We sent colleagues from Tivoli Services to see if they could locate them, but it would seem they had been washed back out to sea with the tide.
It is not uncommon to see this on the beaches, especially after storms – the plant grows near rivers and becks.
So, just a reminder to keep an eye out for them if you see them when enjoying a walk on the beach.
