What can and cannot be recycled?
It can often be confusing what can and cannot be recycled. Therefore we've created an A-Z to help you get it right.
Please do put the right items in the correct bin. Any contamination with items which cannot be recycled, can result in a whole lorry load of recycling being rejected. Not only does this mean we don't get money for the recycling, to help pay for the services we provide, but we also get charged to dispose of it elsewhere.
On the web page you'll also find details of special recycling points for some specific items that you cannot put in the recycling bins. By using these collection points, you can reduce the amount of waste you throw away even more. There's also some other tips on how you can cut down on waste.

How to get rid of larger items responsibly
Continuing the theme of waste and recycling we have also updated our web pages to help you find out how to get rid of larger items, such as furniture, responsibly.
We offer a bulky item collection which, for just £27.71 we'll come and take away up to six items for you - no fuss. And you can be reassured it will be disposed of responsibly and where possible recycled or reused.
You can find out about our bulky item collection service and other ways to get rid of bigger items correctly on our website.
Using someone else to get rid of your waste?
There are several private waste carriers operating in the area. However, anyone transporting waste must have a valid waste carriers permit and they must also provide a waste transfer note which proves that the waste has been transported and disposed of legally.
So before using a private company to come and collect your unwanted items make sure they are licensed to do so and if they are, make sure they provide you with a waste transfer note. Permits are granted by the Environment Agency and you can search for local permit holders on the Environment Agency website.
We all have a legal responsibility, called duty of care, to ensure that our rubbish is passed on to an authorised person so that it can be disposed of safely. If your waste ends up being fly-tipped and is traced back to you, then you could be subject to prosecution.
Using licensed waste carriers helps prevent items being fly-tipped and protects taxpayers' money as every dumped item costs the council to clean-up.

Vaccine news
A key update from our NHS partners:
North Cumbria is well on target to meet the national ambitions of vaccinating all over 50s by the middle of April and all adults by the end of July.
More than 120,000 vaccinations have been given in north Cumbria since the programme started in December, more than a third of our population have received at least a first dose.
- By the end of the month we anticipate vaccinations being offered from 16 regular
bases across north Cumbria. This approach supports our diverse, rural and remote communities with opportunities as close to home as possible
- In three months we have given more than 120,000 vaccinations to members of our
community, and as vaccine supplies improve this will increase quickly
- As people become eligible for the vaccine so do lots of other people in that group
and we are working through them as fast as vaccine supplies allow
- Once you have had your vaccination please keep following the guidelines around
face coverings and social distancing to keep protecting each other
You can find out more about vaccinations from the North Cumbria CCG website.
Keep taking tests
Free rapid result COVID-19 testing for those without symptoms is now available to a wide range of people.
- All parents or support bubbles of school pupils and staff.
- Essential workers who leave home to work and are not being tested by their employer.
The tests are quick and easy. Getting tested regularly reduces the risk of your spreading COVID-19 without knowing it. Find out more on the Cumbria County Council website.
Keeping our area clean and tidy
A big thank you to our colleagues at Tivoli Group Limited for supporting our enforcement officers in their efforts to tackle fly-tipping in the back lanes of Workington.
There has been a lot of proactive work taking place recently in the St John's and St Michael's wards to help keep the lanes clean and tidy and engage with residents in the area.
We'd also like to thank local residents and councillors for supporting these efforts too.
And one of our enforcement team members issued two Fixed Penalty Notices this week – for flytipping and dog fouling.
Remember you can report litter, dog mess, flytipping or other environmental issues online on via our MyAllerdale app.

Damage caused to historic park
A number of unauthorised structures in Workington’s Hall Park which are posing a significant safety risk are due to be taken down.
It is believed the structures, which include trails, ramps, jumps and water-filled excavations, are being used by people as unofficial bike or BMX tracks through the parks.
As well as posing a safety risk the structures are causing serious damage to the woodland and wildlife habitats in Hall Park. Other issues being caused by this activity include obstructions to footpaths, fire damage and littering.
It is also believed that large gatherings of people are taking place to use these unauthorised structures, in contravention of Covid-19 restrictions.
In order to address these unauthorised works, we will remove the structures and begin a programme to reinstate the land and remedy the damage on Monday, 15 March 2021. Any person purporting to own any structures or materials on site should remove them before Sunday, 14 March 2021. Any articles left following this date will be removed and disposed of.
