Have your say on reorganisation plans
We are consulting with local people on potential changes to the structure of local government. The council, and all local authorities in Cumbria, have been invited to submit their proposals for local reorganisation to the Government by December 9.
The Government’s preferred model is to create unitary authorities. This would mean one council carries out all the services for an area and would replace the current two-tier structure in Cumbria of a county council and six districts, each with their own responsibilities and services.
Allerdale council's initial proposal was submitted in early November and outlines its preference for two unitary councils for Cumbria, along with the creation of combined authority run by an Elected Mayor of Cumbria. The Council's Executive has indicated that their preferred position is to form a new authority on the footprint of the existing Allerdale, Copeland and Carlisle councils.
We've launched a survey for residents to give their views on the proposal. Click below to take part. The deadline for responses is December 2.
Reshaping Workington’s GP practices
Plans to bring Workington’s five GP practices together to improve services to patients are being considered.
The five practices have worked together more closely over the last six years developing the Workington Primary Care Centre to improve same day services for people in the town, and have a shared home visiting service.
Now the five surgeries are exploring a more joined up approach which will make services more resilient for patients. Merging practices will give the opportunity to improve access to appointments and a wider range of health professionals, as well as support staff.
Tickets on sale for Allerdale lottery
Tickets for the new Allerdale & Lakeland Lottery with a £25,000 top prize are now available to buy.
It costs just £1 per game to play and participants could win up to £25,000 as part of the weekly draw. Tickets officially went on sale last week with the first draw set to take place on December 19.
However, the focus of the lottery is very much on helping the good causes. For every ticket bought, supporters can choose to provide 50p towards a charity or group of their choice which is registered with the scheme. A further 10p goes towards a general fund for other good causes in Allerdale.
So far more than 40 good causes have signed up to the scheme, which is being run by Gatherwell, a company who manage community lotteries across the country.

Allerdale's virtual Christmas market
Are you local trader, businessperson or crafter? We're hoping to run a virtual Christmas market this year to showcase the amazing goods and services on offer in Allerdale.
It's free to take part and will potentially put whatever you sell on show to thousands of people. The initiative is open to all types of business, from market traders to shoe shops, hairdressers to pubs and takeaways to toy shops.
All they need to provide is:
- 50 to 100 words about their business - not forgetting the business name
- Information on their Christmas offer, deal, discount code or anything else they want people to know about
- An image, video or link to go with the offer
Anyone interested should send the information to the council’s business services coordinator by email on ellie.jones@allerdale.gov.uk. The deadline for content is Thursday, December 3.
