Covid-19 cases continue to rise in Allerdale

The latest Covid-19 data for the county published on Thursday shows the number of people in hospital increasing sharply, and 24 local people dying from the disease in the last seven days.

As of November 10 there were 222 people in hospital across Cumbria’s two NHS Trusts (64 in North Cumbria and 158 Morecambe Bay), up from 159 last week - a 40% increase.

Despite welcome signs that infection spread may be slowing in some areas, the news has prompted warnings that people must respect national lockdown measures and follow the public health guidance.

There were 999 new cases in Cumbria (+39 increase, +4%, from 960 cases in previous week) in the last week and in Allerdale there were 173 new positive cases recorded, up from 146 cases the previous week.

For the fourth week in a row, the 45-59 age group accounted for the greatest number of new cases in Cumbria.

Tributes to long-serving councillor

Joe Holliday

Tributes have been paid to long-serving Workington councillor Joe Holliday, who sadly passed away last weekend.

Cllr Holliday's contribution to the community was invaluable with his career in local government beginning 60 years ago. After retirement from Cumbria County Council, he continued to work and volunteer in the community as a parish clerk, school governor and as a councillor for Workington Town Council, Allerdale Borough Council and Cumbria County Council.

Tributes have come in from senior councillors at Allerdale, Workington Town Council and Cumbria County Council.

Sports clubs get £30,000 in grants

cockermouth jfc

The incredible work of sports clubs and groups across Allerdale is benefitting to the tune of more than £30,000 thanks to our new grant scheme, with support from Sellafield Ltd.

In the summer organisations in the borough were invited to bid to us for funding for projects that would make a significant difference to their members and users from the local community.

Projects put forward must deliver against at least two of the scheme’s priorities, which include creating new participation opportunities, improving resilience, improving economic/environmental sustainability of the organisation, improving access for those more likely to be less active and encouraging new participants into sport or physical activity through innovative ideas.

The recipients of the first wave of funding have now been decided with almost £34,000 allocated to community clubs for projects such as improvements to changing rooms, investing in new equipment and developing new biking facilities.

How you can support market traders in lockdown

Low Howgill butchers - Keswick Market

Customers who shop at markets across Allerdale can continue to support their favourite traders while national restrictions are in place – with the launch of a new ‘virtual market’.

Our markets have been postponed in line with Government guidance and will resume when restrictions are eased. However, people can still support the array of businesses who normally trade at the council-run markets in Workington, Keswick and Wigton through their online offering or via home deliveries.

We have created a new section of our website to list the traders currently offering alternative ways of buying their products with the directory now online at https://www.allerdale.gov.uk/en/sport-leisure-arts-culture/markets/virtual-market/.

Remembrance Day commemorations

Mayor Remembrance Day

The Mayor of Allerdale, Cllr Hilary Harrington, represented the borough at Remembrance commemorations this week.

On Sunday she attended a small wreath-laying ceremony in Vulcan Park, Workington and on Wednesday attended a short service in Harrington to commemorate Armistice Day and the centenary of the burial of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey.

The grave of the Unknown Warrior represents those who died in the war and whose place of death is not known or whose remains are unidentified.

The Harrington Standard flag was raised in respect and remembrance.

Funding advice session

Alongside Arts Council England (ACE) we're hosting an advice session primarily targeted at individuals and organisations not in receipt of regular funding from the Arts Council.

The session will be of particular interest to those based or working in of Allerdale and Copeland. The presentation will cover ACE grant schemes but with a focus on the National Lottery project grants and developing your creative practice. A Q&A will follow.
