Rise in Covid-19 cases in Allerdale

As England starts a new period of national lockdown, latest data for the week ending 30 October shows the number of new Covid-19 infections continue to rise in Cumbria, but with variation across the county’s six districts.

While Barrow and Carlisle remained the districts with the highest infection rates, both saw their rates drop. Barrow remains above the England average and Carlisle just below.

By contrast Allerdale, Copeland and South Lakeland all saw significant increases in their rates, though all remain well below the England average. In Allerdale, cases went up from 88 to 146 - a 66 per cent rise.

The weekly Covid-19 situation report can be found at www.cumbria.gov.uk/stopthespread.

For the third week in a row, the 45-59 age group accounted for the greatest number of new cases in Cumbria. Cases among the over 60s also continued to rise, with the infection rate for this age group now just below the England average (155/100,000 v 161/100,000).

The number of patients with Covid-19 in hospitals beds across Cumbria’s two NHS Trusts rose to 159 on the 2nd of November (this includes the Royal Lancaster Infirmary which also takes patients from South Cumbria). Registrars data shows a further 11 people died as a result of Covid-19.

Remembrance Sunday advice

poppy

We're joining local councils across Cumbria in urging people who will be eager to take part in this year’s remembrance commemorations to pay their respects in a safe and responsible way.

As this year’s remembrance will now take place during the national lockdown in England, commemorations across the county will be different than usual and residents are being urged by all agencies in Cumbria to be mindful of the new restrictions and to remember at home.

There are several ways residents can show their support, whether that be displaying poppy posters in their home windows, sharing stories, photos and drawings online using the hashtag #CumbriaRemembers, watching the service on television, or pausing for the two minute zilence in their home or on their doorsteps.

Other ways to support this year’s Poppy Appeal include donating online at www.britishlegion.org.uk  and taking part in the 11/11 challenge and virtual poppy runs.

Are you winter ready?

A campaign has been launched this week as part of Cumbria County Council’s ‘winter ready’ plans to support residents and businesses during the coming months. This year’s campaign will reflect the ongoing coronavirus public health information and guidance, as well as winter travel and weather preparations.

The campaign seeks to ensure people have the right information, advice and guidance at their fingertips. It has been developed, and is supported by a wide range of partners, including Cumbria County Council, the six district councils, NHS, Cumbria Community Foundation and the Environment Agency.

The campaign provides advice and assistance on everything you need to know to help you be prepared and to get winter ready, including:

  • The latest information, guidance and support available to people regarding coronavirus.
  • Emergency planning - advice on how to protect your home from flooding and find out if you are at risk.
  • Winter travel - how to stay safe, keep up to date with road and weather information and make sure your vehicle is ready for winter.
  • General health advice - staying well this winter.

Talk and Tidy - supporting the community

Talk and Tidy Moorclose

It's always great to get out and about in the community, so we were only too glad to take part in the Allerdale Local Focus Hub's (a partnership of public agencies) Talk & Tidy initiative in Moorclose, Workington last week.

The idea will help organisations like ourselves speak to people across the borough, signpost to services and listen to concerns - as well as doing a bit of a tidy up.

This event was supported by local resident William Baker, grandson Dylan Rooke, Cumbria County Council, ourselves and PCSO Nichol from Cumbria Police. Refreshments were provided by Moorclose Community Centre.
