Have your say on our draft planning guidance for Workington
Residents and businesses are being invited to give their views on a draft document which will provide a guide to development in Workington town centre.
The draft Workington Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) sets out a vision and strategic objectives for the area with a view to promoting regeneration, encouraging investment and facilitating positive change.
Four key themes have been used to identify ways to develop the town centre:
- Connectivity and movement to/within the town centre;
- Re-use of empty properties;
- Improving the environment; and
- Development of key sites
The Allerdale Local Plan (Part 2) was adopted by Allerdale Borough Council in July and the SPD expands upon and supports policies within the adopted Allerdale Local Plan (Parts 1 and 2).
The consultation will run until 5pm on Friday 4th December 2020. Comments should be sent to planningpolicy@allerdale.gov.uk or to The Planning Policy Team, Allerdale Borough Council, Allerdale House, Workington, CA14 3YJ.

New police team for Wigton
There was some news this week from colleagues at Cumbria Police of a new dedicated police team in Wigton.
The town is the latest place to feature in an expansion by Cumbria Constabulary of neighbourhood policing, with officers providing an enhanced visible presence and more capacity to respond to local concerns.
Five officers will be based in the Local Links Building at the Market Hall in Wigton which is run by the North Allerdale Development Trust (NADT).
Latest on Coronavirus
717 new COVID19 cases were reported in Cumbria in the week ending 16 October, up from 612 the previous week.
While Barrow continued to have the highest number of new cases (194), the infection rate decreased slightly over the previous week (295/100k to 289/100k), providing an early indication that the local restrictions that have been put in place may be having a positive impact. The area’s infection rate remains the highest in Cumbria and well above the national average (170/100k).
The Health Protection Board agreed that Barrow should remain a High Alert area.
Carlisle also saw a large rise in new cases compared the previous week, up from 87 to 190. A significant rise in Eden is also of concern but may be related to increased levels of testing in the district. Both areas now have an infection rate slightly higher than the national average and are being monitored closely, with consideration being given to whether further action may be required to reduce infection spread.
This week’s data also shows that for the first time since August the 45-59 year old age group saw the highest number of new cases, overtaking 15-29 year olds.
There were 50 confirmed COVID-19 patients in hospital beds in Cumbria compared to 29 the previous week.
In Allerdale there were 65 new confirmed cases in the week ending 16 October 2020. The Alert Level for Allerdale remains at Medium.

Firework safety
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service are urging families to think twice about firework displays, but if you do choose to have one please plan and prepare carefully to be as safe as possible.
Due to the current pandemic and government restrictions on social gatherings, many organised Bonfire Night displays are cancelled this year. This brings the risk of many home organised bonfires and firework celebrations.
Across Cumbria it is against the law to have more than 6 people in your home or garden. In addition, in the Barrow Borough Council area it is against the law to meet other people inside their home, groups of up to 6 are still permitted in gardens.

Coronavirus Alert Levels
You may be travelling to, or know people thinking of travelling from, other parts of the country over half-term. Government restrictions and guidance on travel are different depending on the COVID Alert Level where you live.
People from VERY HIGH alert level areas are advised not to travel out of their area or stay away from home overnight.
Make sure you know before you go and help stop the spread.
Autumn leaves
Autumn is very much with us and, as the leaves fall off the leaves, they can cause issues in road gullies and drains. Our colleagues at Tivoli Services are out every day sweeping leaves from the roadside, but if you need to report a particular problem area, you can do so online.
Do remember that if the inside of the road drain is blocked and water is not flowing into it, then this should be reported to Cumbria County Council on their website.
