Helping business

Coronavirus business grants: Discretionary scheme payments begin

This week we've made our first payments under the discretionary grants scheme to 117 businesses totalling £668,000.

We’re still in the process of finalising information on some of the applications still left and these will be included in a second-round of payments to be made soon.

The scheme was designed to support those businesses who've suffered financially due to the effects of Covid-19 and have not have been eligible or received a payment from the other coronavirus grant schemes.

We'll soon be announcing a second phase of the grant scheme to help more businesses and more information will be announced soon.

Play parks reopen after coronavirus restrictions

Play park swing

We're delighted to have reopened our play areas in line with the easing of lockdown restrictions and welcome everyone back to enjoy them.

We ask that everyone adhere to the relevant guidance when using these facilities, particularly around social distancing and hand washing. New signage has been placed up around the play areas to remind people about the guidelines. We are focusing on keeping these sites as safe and clean as possible and we appreciate your co-operation.

Dangerous structure/road closure in Workington

Road closed sign

Our building control officers earlier this week were called out to inspect the old Opera House building on Ladies Walk/Tiffen Lane in Workington, after concerns were raised about the condition of the roof. Some work was carried out on the roof structure to make the building safe.

Tiffin Lane, which runs alongside the building, will remain closed to the public for safety reasons and we ask that people do not attempt to use this lane. All ground floor entry points to the building remain sealed and so we also ask that, for their own safety, people do not enter the building without the owner's consent.

Due to the coronavirus public council meetings are continuing to be held virtually. Councillors and those taking part in meetings are using video conferencing software Zoom but members of the public can watch a live stream (and a recording afterwards) of the meeting on the council's YouTube channel.

This coming week we have a meeting of the Executive (4pm, Wednesday 15th July) and a meeting of the Overview & Scrutiny Committee (1.30pm, Friday 17th July).

Council's support for North Lakes Foodbank

Marion Fitzgerald foodbank

As you'll have seen in last week's edition of this newsletter, as a council we're supporting the North Lakes Foodbank with their Summer Foodpacks - A Helping Hand scheme alongside Cumbria County Council.

This week some of our councillors and staff members offered their time to help the foodbank pack up the food parcels which will be handed out during the summer holidays. During a packing session in Maryport on Monday around 1.4 tonnes of food was organised into parcels.

The North Lakes Foodbank can be found online at https://www.thefoodbank.org.uk/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/foodbanknorthlakes

Remembering Srebrencia 25 years on

Candle

This week marks 25 years since genocide in Srebrencia where over 8,000 Bosnian Muslim people were murdered.

The Mayor of Allerdale, Hilary Harrington, issued this message on her Facebook page: "We remember the innocent lives take and join Remembering Srebrencia in commemorating these atrocities so the Never Again becomes never again. We must unite against hatred and learn the lessons of the Bosnian genocide."
