HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE EVENT:
The AmTech Career Academy presents a unique opportunity to connect with your future workforce – a generation brimming with fresh perspectives and untapped potential. But navigating the halls of a high school filled with eager, nervous teenagers requires a slightly different approach than traditional career fairs. To make the most of this valuable event, here's how to prepare:
Before the Fair:
-
Highlight Entry-Level Opportunities: Focus on internships, volunteer programs, and junior positions relevant to high school students.
-
Craft a Compelling Message: Develop a concise and engaging pitch about your company and its career possibilities. Use clear, relatable language and emphasize the benefits of working with you.
-
Prepare Interactive Materials: Ditch the dense brochures and bring engaging visuals, quizzes, or activities to spark their interest. Consider hands-on demos or interactive displays.
-
Assemble a Dynamic Team: Send representatives who are passionate, approachable, and skilled at connecting with young people. Diverse teams showcasing various career paths are particularly impactful.
-
Practice Makes Perfect: Conduct mock interviews with colleagues or students to refine your pitch and presentation style. Prepare answers to common questions like "What kind of skills are you looking for?" and "Why should I work for your company?"
During the Fair:
-
Be Proactive, Be Inviting: Don't wait for students to approach you. Engage them with a welcoming smile and initiate conversations. Briefly introduce your company and ask open-ended questions to gauge their interests.
-
Listen Actively, Show Genuine Interest: Don't just talk about your company – listen carefully to their aspirations, skills, and concerns. Show genuine interest in their goals and experiences.
-
Connect with Educators and Counselors: Build relationships with school staff who can provide valuable insights into students' strengths and future plans. Collaborate on potential internship or mentorship opportunities.
-
Follow Up Promptly: Collect business cards or contact information and follow up with interested students within a week. Send personalized emails thanking them for their time and offering additional resources or follow-up opportunities.
Remember:
-
Dress Professionally, but Approachably: Maintain a professional demeanor, but avoid overly formal attire. Aim for a friendly and approachable image.
-
Be Patient and Understanding: High school students may be nervous or unsure about their career paths. Offer guidance and be patient as they explore their options.
-
Focus on Potential, Not Perfection: Don't expect polished resumes or extensive experience. Look for potential, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn.
-
Make it Fun and Engaging: High schoolers respond well to interactive activities and humor. Make your booth a fun and informative space where they can learn and explore.
By following these tips, you can turn the AmTech Career Fair into a productive and rewarding experience for both you and the students. You'll not only leave a lasting impression, but also potentially discover your next generation of talented employees.
