Did you know referred applicants are more qualified, hired faster, and stick around longer.

How do you start an employee referral program?

First decide who can refer employees to your program; New hires ask new hires for names of people they enjoyed working with at previous places of employment. Current employees ask for employees to refer people that they feel match the program’s values. Past employees, do you have an alumni group or past employees whom you are still in contact with that could refer applicants. Families current and past enrolled could be an untaped resource for employee referrals.

What are the benefits of individuals referring employees to your program?

Start with tracking the employee referrals this can be done many ways there are free templates like https://www.jotform.com/table-templates/demo/employee-referral-tracking or you can create your own spreadsheet. The person giving the referral and the candidate referred is invested in where they are in the process. It is important to have clear lines of communication for each step of the hiring process.

Next, decide what the compensation will be for the individual that referred the candidate and when will the benefit be given. Compensation could be given after the employee referral has been employed for a length of time, for example after 60 days or 6 months. The compensation may need to be equivalent to the quality of the candidate if the referral is one with limited education or experience versus a referral with years of experience and or education there may be different levels to the compensation. Benefits for employee referrals could include gift cards, a bonus, and for families giving referrals there could be a reduction in fees charged for childcare.

When and how do I tell people about the employee referral program?

Use video or written testimonials of current employees, past employees, and parents to post on your program’s website and emails. Create signage that could include a QR code that directs applicants to apply for the position. Place signage in front of your programs front area, distribute cards or flyers to staff and families. Send out information via social media sites and in text messages.  Without overwhelming people in your communication about the employee referral program you still need to be consistent if the employee referral program is still active communicate that on a regular basis.
