Happy National Native American, American Indian, and Alaska Native Heritage Month! During this month, we honor the rich and diverse culture, contributions, and historical legacy of Native Americans, American Indians, and Alaska Natives.
There were multiple iterations of a national recognition of Native Americans. However, in 1990, President George H. W. Bush officially designated the month of November as National Native American Heritage Month. Later in 2008, the designation was amended to include Alaskan Natives.
Construction is set to begin on the Herring Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project over the Brazos River. Site preparation work will start this week followed by major construction expected to start after Thanksgiving. The project is anticipated to be complete in early fall 2026.
The City of Waco has identified repairs that are still manageable from a cost standpoint, so we are completing them now before they worsen and become more expensive. The project includes bridge rail and pedestrian walkway improvements, bridge joint replacements, vegetation removal, minor concrete repairs, a polymer concrete overlay on the Herring Avenue Bridge over the Brazos River, and replacement of outdated or damaged guardrail.
What would you like the City of Waco to focus on? We need your input to help us make upcoming planning and budgeting decisions. Invitations have been mailed to randomly selected households asking for feedback via The National Community Survey. Check your mailbox to see if you received the survey!
If you aren't selected for this initial survey effort, we'll also share a survey open to the whole community soon. Sign up for notifications below when this community-wide survey is available. Thank you for helping to create a better community for all!
Another restoration through the City of Waco Housing & Community Development's Owner-Occupied Home Rehabilitation Program!
We are proud to share Carol Salcedo's story. After living in Waco for nearly 65 years, Carol needed significant repairs she couldn't afford. This wasn't just about repairs. It was about preserving a multi-generational home.
Thanks to the program, her home now includes a new foundation, roof, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical system, along with a fully updated kitchen, an ADA-accessible bathroom, new windows, flooring, and fresh paint. It's now a safe and energy-efficient space where her family can gather!
Watch the video to hear Carol's heartwarming experience and how the Home Rehabilitation Program has been a true blessing for her, her loved ones, and future generations.

The City of Waco was selected for a 2025 Texas Municipal League Municipal Excellence Award for our Lost Pets Waco program. Lost Pets Waco is a free interactive online map that helps reunite lost pets with their owners by displaying photos and locations of strays found by Animal Control. The online map was a collaborative project with our Communications & Marketing, Information Technology, and Pet Circle Regional Animal Center teams.
We’re very proud of our City of Waco staff and their collaborative work on this project that will continue to help keep the animal population lower at Pet Circle Regional Animal Center.
The City of Waco held its annual Raise the Roof event on October 27 with Waco Habitat for Humanity. City of Waco employees joined future homeowner Jonisha Majors to build the exterior of her future family home. The home is being built for the Majors family with funds donated by State Farm, South State and the Waco Association of Realtors.
Raise the Roof is a partnership between Waco Habitat for Humanity, the City of Waco, and local donors to build a home for a low-income family. A heartfelt thank you to all our City employees that came out to volunteer and support the Majors family.

There's just one more week of the routine maintenance on the City of Waco's water system. After Monday, November 17, your water will return to the normal smell and taste. Remember, while we're performing the water system cleaning, your water is still safe to drink and use!
We temporarily changed the disinfectant in your water from chloramine to free chlorine to remove organic buildup in pipes caused by things like warm weather and water sitting in the system.
