Join the Waco Police Department and your local first responders for a night of fun and community on Tuesday, October 7! National Night Out is an annual event where neighborhoods across Waco host block parties to take a stand against crime. Waco Police and other first responders stop by for casual conversations, personal introductions, and to help bridge the gap between public safety and the community.
Check out the full calendar of events later this week to find a National Night Out block party near you. Everyone is welcome!

October 5 to 11 is Fire Prevention Week, and this year's theme is "Charge into Fire Safety: Know the Risks of Lithium-Ion Batteries."
-
Buy only listed products: Look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA.
-
Charge devices safely: Always use the cords that came with the product to charge and follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Charge your device on a hard surface and unplug it or remove the battery when it's fully charged.
-
Recycle batteries responsibly: Don't throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe recycling location like Cobbs Recycling Center.
The Waco Fire Department is always ready to respond on your worst day, but we're also here to help you prevent emergencies from ever happening. Sign up for a free fire extinguisher training!
Learn about the different types of fires, how to properly operate a fire extinguisher, and critical emergency response procedures. This training can equip you with the skills to be the first line of defense in containing a fire and protecting your family and property.
The annual Ironman 70.3 Waco event is set to return on Sunday, October 5. The event will attract approximately 7,500 athletes and spectators and will be headquartered at Indian Spring Park. Thank you to our Public Works team for their hard work in getting the new transfer station and landfill up and running. The transfer station will serve as a hub where residential and commercial waste is consolidated before being transported to the landfill.
For the next few months, the transfer station and the new landfill will only be open to Solid Waste trucks as we establish a fluff layer of softer trash that protects the liner of the landfill. Public access is expected to open in spring 2026. Until then, residents should continue using the current landfill at 1624 Hannah Hill Road.
This past weekend, the City of Waco and Cesar Chavez Neighborhood Association unveiled “Dignity,” a new mural on South Waco Community Center. The mural was commissioned by the Cesar Chavez Neighborhood Association, and it was created by renowned artist Jesus Rivera. It features the neighborhood’s Hispanic heritage and celebrates more than 30 influential Mexican and Chicano men and women who have shaped Texas through the arts, public service, business, and social causes.
As we honor Hispanic Heritage Month, join us in reflecting on the contributions of Hispanic leaders who have helped define Texas history and culture.
