 The community gathered on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Doris Miller Community Center to celebrate the grand opening of the newly renovated Doris Miller Community Pool! The celebration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, an exciting beach ball drop over the pool, a free open swim, and burgers and hotdogs. The pool will be open year-round with flexible scheduling for early risers, families, and evening swimmers.
 February is dedicated as Black History Month, honoring and celebrating the contributions, legacy, and culture of African Americans in our community.
Black History Month originated in the United States in 1926 as a week-long celebration in February established by historian Carter G. Woodson to highlight the contributions of African Americans. Later in 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month calling upon the public "to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans."
 Join us at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 at Pet Circle Regional Animal Center, 2032 Circle Road, as we celebrate giving Circle Road the honorary name of Pet Circle Road! After the ceremony, join us afterward for refreshments and an open house to meet our mascot Chance and our adoptable animals.

 The Texas Department of Transportation is gearing up for a major four-year expansion project on Interstate 35. Construction is scheduled to begin this month and will focus on the stretch between 12th Street and Highway 6. The $234 million project will result in eight main lanes, continuous frontage roads with redesigned ramps, enhanced pedestrian and bicycle safety with new sidewalks, and rebuilt crossings with U-turn lanes. The Valley Mills Drive crossing will see the biggest change with the removal of the northbound flyover.
 The City of Waco is currently developing its 2025 Annual Action Plan to improve housing options and encourage community development in the City. This plan determines how the City of Waco spends federal funding from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME).

 Run, jump, hop, or skip your way through a sidewalk obstacle course! The Health District is hosting a Sidewalk Chalk Contest to see who can draw the best obstacle course. A local artist will paint the top five drawings on a sidewalk in a local park. Submit your design by Feb. 28. Voting will begin in early March.
