 Every year, Americans come together on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to serve in their neighborhoods and communities. The day is observed as a day on, not a day off. It is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
City Offices Closed
City of Waco offices will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20. Residents with a Monday trash collection day will have their gray waste carts and blue recycling carts collected later on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
 On Thursday, Jan. 16, the community gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Bledsoe-Miller STEAM Center for Excellence!
Soon the old community center will be transformed into a state-of-the-art facility with programs focused on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math for children, teens, and adults. From its location on the Brazos River, the STEAM Center is a testament to the City’s vision for a thriving, equitable, and forward-thinking community.
 Join us for the grand opening celebration of the newly-renovated Doris Miller Community Pool (1020 Elm Ave) at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25! The indoor facility features four competitive lanes, along with space for fitness classes, swim lessons and community programs. The opening marks an exciting new chapter for the Doris Miller Community Center and the Waco community.
 The City of Waco will hold its general election for City Councilmembers representing Districts II, IV, and V on Saturday, May 3, 2025. Residents interested in running for a seat may file their application. The deadline is at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb.14, 2025.
Candidates must have resided in their respective districts for at least six months to qualify.
 Applications are now open for our 2025 Waco City Academy in March!
The Academy is a free 10-week class with an interactive, behind-the-scenes look into city government with hands-on activities and presentations. From public safety, utilities, zoos, and more, you’ll learn about everything that makes our city special.
 The City of Waco will receive $3.2 million in funding from the EPA to improve food security, sustainability, and climate resilience in our community. This is part of the larger $17.9 million Community Change Grant awarded to local organizations, spearheaded by Mission Waco.
Over the next three years, the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District will use the funding for county-wide food security and sustainability initiatives, including community gardens, tree planting, and composting. The Health District will also take on the role of supporting the administrative needs of the SCRAP Collective (Sustainable Community and Regenerative Agricultural Project).
The Housing & Community Development Department will use the funds to address lead hazards in low-income homes through the Home Rehabilitation Program.
