Meet Jake Dunnam, our Assistant Building Official at the City of Tyler, where he’s been a key member of our team for over a decade. Jake bridges the gap between the Building Services Department and construction professionals, helping to resolve challenges that arise during the construction process. He also stands in whenever the Chief Building Official is away. Jake’s dedication shines through in his pursuit of ICC certifications and the time he spends studying ICC codes.
Beyond his professional life, Jake’s heart is with his family—his parents, siblings, and in-laws, and especially his wife, Tiffany. They share their home with Bella, their Boston Terrier, and have recently embarked on the path to adopting a child. Jake has a knack for both mechanics and creativity, whether he's fixing up cars, tinkering with computers and electronics, woodworking, or making music. “Diamonds and Gold” by Kenny Wayne Shepard is his favorite song. When he's not busy with all his hobbies, he enjoys going out for Japanese food or hanging out at the Boulders at Lake Tyler.

Building Safety Month
May is National Building Safety Month. The City's Communications Department got in on the Building Safety Month fun this year, with several team members recently earning their "certificates" to be Junior Code Officials! Your child can also become a Junior Code Official by completing exercises in the Building Safety Month activity book available here. Additionally, as a family, you can go through the "Building Safety in Your Home" checklist to ensure that your home is safe and secure. Many of these tips can be applicable to your place of business as well.
Building Services would like to highlight these safety tips in particular:
- Create or update a building safety plan for your business or residence.
- Designate a meeting spot outside in the event of a fire.
- Designate a safe area inside in the event of a weather emergency such as a tornado.
- Review the building safety plan with your family or workers to ensure everyone is aware of meeting spots and procedures.
- Post copies of the plan throughout your business or even your residence.
- Put together or update an emergency supply kit.
- Test your smoke alarms and CO detectors for proper use. Most manufacturers suggest replacing smoke alarms every 1o years.
