Preservation of the state’s architecture is a year-round endeavor, but few experiences showcase this work more beautifully than a candlelight tour (all the glow, none of the fire hazards) of historic homes during the holiday season. Across Texas, preservation groups illuminate the state’s architectural heritage with evening tours filled with sounds of caroling, the comfort of hot chocolate and wassail, and hands-on activities for families.
Texas takes on a special glow in December, with historic sites, courthouse squares, frontier forts, hotel lobbies, markets, and museums all adding their own traditions to the season. From Victorian celebrations to Las Posadas, German Christmas pyramids, cowboy parades, and Texas-themed décor, these 12 Days of Texas Holiday Heritage highlight the places where heritage shines brightest and history lights the way during the holidays.
This year, the Heritage Traveler spotlighted 10 Texas Treasure Businesses and celebrated 49 new award recipients. These longstanding institutions have served their communities for decades. As 2025 comes to a close, we invite you to help keep Texas' heritage thriving by nominating your favorite business that has been in continuous operation for 50 years or more. Happy holidays from the Heritage Traveler editorial team.
