Welcome to Texas, a state bursting with remarkable people and places that have shaped our history and heritage. In honor of Women's History Month, Texas Time Travel is celebrating the inspiring stories of remarkable Texas women who shaped our state's rich history. From well-known figures to unsung heroes, Texas has been home to trailblazers who left indelible marks on our collective consciousness. Join us as we uncover the stories and places that celebrate these amazing women, whose legacies continue to empower us today and for generations to come.
In 1897, F. W. Henderson opened Mason's first bank next door to the former saloon, but it was Anna Mebus Martin who made history here. When you hear tales of tough Texas women, seemingly inured to the hardships of 19th-century frontier life, you should picture Anna Martin. Martin was Texas' first female bank founder/president and upon her passing at the age of 81 she was one of Mason's wealthiest and most successful women.
Now, Martin’s bank offices compose the Red Door Bed & Breakfast on the courthouse square. Built in 1984, the business serves as a time capsule of Mason’s commercial growth as it tried to shake its reputation at the dawn of the new century.
Like overnight stays with a story? This former frontier town is full of history-rich accommodations. Browse over a dozen historic B&Bs when Historic Overnights: Mason launches next month.
