The Cooke County Courthouse in Gainesville is designed well for hot Texas summers: Its central tower acts as a heat chimney, pulling warm air up out of the building and keeping the interior cooler. It anchors a town square at California and Dixon streets, with many original buildings still standing today.
Use the THC’s Texas Time Travel site to start planning your summer adventures. Search by theme, such as historic downtowns, or start with your region to find sites nearby.
As families prepare to stay entertained during the summer, the Texas Historical Commission is providing free instructive resources about Texas history, preservation, and heritage tourism as an alternative to visiting a historic site outside your region.
Our Texas History at Home page encourages families to explore activities, including downloadable coloring sheets, educational video playlists on our YouTube channel, and mobile tours highlighting the Texas Revolution, Chisholm Trail, Texas military history, and more. Explore our state’s heritage and share #TXHistoryAtHome.
Explore the real places and real stories of African Americans in Texas through a mobile tour. The tour features a rich blend of images, videos, first-person narratives, maps, and useful visitor information for exploring historical sites across the state.
You can use the tour on the road or browse from home to discover or revisit places such as Dallas' Deep Ellum Historic District, people like Huntsville's Samuel Walker Houston, and much more.
Just as the THC works with communities to protect historic places, we must work together to protect public health as our state historic sites reopen.
Select state historic sites have reopened with limited capacity, with some closed due to construction and other improvement projects. Additionally, some sites are requiring pre-paid reservations over the phone. Please check with the site before you visit for the latest information.
