Engineering Fair

Igniting Innovation: Hunt Elementary’s STREAM Program Inspires Future STEM Leaders

For the past three years, Christi Fuchs has been transforming how students at Hunt Elementary engage with science and engineering. By replacing the traditional science fair with a more hands-on, future-focused STEM Fair, she’s created a powerful platform that grows each year in scope and impact.

In the second year, the fair introduced student interviews, allowing participants to showcase not just their projects but also their critical thinking and communication skills. This year, thanks to the support of Region 3 Education Service Center (ESC) and a collaborative concept inspired by Region 10 ESC, the grade 5 experience reached new heights.

Students were challenged to dive into STEM career exploration by researching a profession and designing a brand-new tool to support that field. Using TinkerCad, they brought their ideas to life and 3D printed their innovative creations. From concept to prototype, students applied the engineering design process while gaining valuable insight into real-world applications.

This kind of early exposure to STEM careers lays a strong foundation as students transition into secondary education and begin exploring Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways. —Laura Deiss, Region 3 ESC STEM Lead
