Middle School Advanced Mathematics TEKS Adopted
At the April 2025 meeting, the State Board of Education (SBOE) adopted TEKS for middle school advanced mathematics. The middle school advanced mathematics TEKS are the same knowledge and skills as the current mathematics TEKS for grades 6–8 which have been rearranged and compacted to accelerate instruction for students enrolling in Algebra I in eighth grade.
The middle school advanced mathematics TEKS may be implemented in classrooms beginning with the 2025–2026 school year and are currently posted on the Middle School Advanced Mathematics TEKS Review web page. Once the new TEKS have been filed with the Texas Register, the TEKS will be available in Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Chapter 111, as follows
- 19 TAC §111.29 Grade 6, Middle School Advanced Mathematics, Adopted 2025
- 19 TAC §111.30 Grade 7, Middle School Advanced Mathematics, Adopted 2025
- 19 TAC §111.31 Grade 8, Middle School Advanced Mathematics, Algebra I, Adopted 2025
Districts and open-enrollment charter schools are required to offer a middle school advanced mathematics program that enables students to enroll in Algebra I in grade 8. The middle school advanced mathematics TEKS are optional standards that districts and schools may implement to fulfill the middle school advanced mathematics requirement. Districts and schools may also elect to offer locally developed middle school advanced mathematics programs but must ensure that students have the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in all the middle school grade level mathematics TEKS, grades 6-8.
For reference, the middle school advanced mathematics program requirement in state law can be found in Texas Education Code §28.029. Additional requirements for implementing middle school advanced mathematics programs are outlined in 19 TAC §74.2101.
Texas Mobile STEM Laboratory Application Window is Open!
Through a partnership between the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and Learning Undefeated, the Texas Mobile STEM Lab will continue to provide STEM engagement opportunities for students during the 2025–2026 school year. Using custom-outfitted STEM learning spaces, the mobile labs offer engaging, hands-on educational experiences for kindergarten through grade 8 students and teachers. The application window is April 1, 2025, through May 31, 2025. All Texas public schools that offer classes for kindergarten through grades 8 are eligible to register for a free visit during the 2025–2026 school year. Apply on our STEM web page. Mathematics Achievement Academies K–5
To intentionally facilitate problem-solving with students, we must establish a common understanding of what it means to problem solve. Problem-solving involves the application of previously learned mathematical skills, concepts, and/or procedures to a situation where the solution process is not immediately apparent. Problem-solving proficiency improves as students use a problem-solving heuristic to structure and monitor their thinking.

Need help meeting a student’s course needs?
The Texas Virtual School Network (TXVSN) can help meet students’ needs through TEA-approved online courses. The TXVSN statewide course catalog provides high school mathematics courses that can satisfy a student's graduation requirement. As a resource to local education agencies, the course catalog has expanded to offer three middle school advanced mathematics pathways to support the implementation of Senate Bill 2124.
The TXVSN courses are aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and taught by Texas-certified teachers trained in best practices in online instruction. Schools can use the TXVSN courses to create flexibility in a student’s schedule, allow a student to accelerate their learning, or address local teacher shortages. Students enrolled in a TXVSN course can generate funding regardless of whether the student is physically present at school while participating in the course.
