Title I, Part A Parent and Family Engagement Requirements Timely Reminders
With the end of the school year approaching, LEAs and Title I, Part A campuses should reflect on the Parent and Family Engagement (PFE) activities that took place throughout the school year, to ensure compliance with Title I, Part A PFE requirements noted in Sections 1112 and 1116 of the Every Students Succeeds Act (ESSA). Please review the following reminders and take appropriate action to ensure they are carried out:
- Schedule, consult, and conduct an annual evaluation with parents and families of the content and effectiveness of the LEA and campus parent and family engagement policies and programs toward improving the academic quality of the schools.
- Consult with parents and families in the development, review, or revision, and evaluation of the Schoolwide Plan/Campus Improvement Plan and the Title I, Part A LEA Program Plan/District Improvement Plan.
- Provide parents with information about the level of achievement of their child in each of the required state academic assessments. If this cannot be completed before the school year concludes, ensure this is done as soon as practicable.
- Provide materials and training to help parents improve their children’s academic achievement.
- Aid parents in understanding state standards, assessments, and how to monitor their child’s progress.
- Carry out the ongoing plan of how to collaborate with parents in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all PFE documents, activities, events, and programs throughout the entire school year.
- Continuously collect feedback from all stakeholders after each PFE activity and event.
- Ensure stakeholders have continuous input on how to utilize the 1% PFE set-aside funds for the upcoming year, if applicable.
- Always send information to parents in a language and format they can understand (not only languages, but consider reading levels and mediums of communication).
- Inform parents if their child has been assigned, or taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements at the grade level and subject area.
- Collect all PFE compliance documentation, including invitations, agendas, minutes, sign-in sheets, and meeting documents.
Please ensure that your teams are aware of these requirements and take necessary steps to ensure that the requirements are implemented with fidelity to build partnerships with families and for the goal of having a positive impact on student educational outcomes.
