LOTE Engagement Sessions

To provide guidance regarding common questions related to LOTE, TEA’s enrichment team will be providing a set of interactive engagement sessions. These sessions are available for LOTE educators, administrators, and counselors who did not attend the LOTE sessions in February 2024. This set of sessions will provide information about many LOTE topics, including–

  • exceptions;
  • credentialing; and
  • considerations for military students.

The following two options are available for attending the upcoming LOTE engagement sessions. Please note that both session opportunities include the same information:

LOTE Timely Topic: “Where are my TEKS?”

To support Texas LOTE educators and stakeholders, each newsletter will highlight a commonly asked question. This edition’s question is –

“I am a new high school French teacher, and I am having a hard time finding the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for French. Where can I find the French TEKS?”

The TEKS for LOTE are not language-specific, but rather are categorized into three categories. They include–

Districts and open-enrollment charters may provide instruction in any language on the basis that a qualified teacher is providing instruction and that relevant instructional materials are available to teach it. Districts and open-enrollment charters may award LOTE credit through courses that lead to demonstrated student proficiency in the TEKS for LOTE.

  • American Sign Language
  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Latin
  • Spanish

The Texas Virtual School Network (TXVSN) can help meet students’ needs through TEA-approved online courses. The TXVSN statewide course catalog provides schools and students access to high school, Advanced Placement, career and technical education, and dual credit courses for initial credit or credit recovery. The TXVSN courses are aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and taught by Texas-certified teachers trained in best practices in online instruction. Schools can use the TXVSN courses to create flexibility in a student’s schedule, allow a student to accelerate their learning, or address local teacher shortages. Students enrolled in a TXVSN course can generate funding regardless of whether the student is physically present at school while participating in the course. For more information about the courses offered through the TXVSN, please visit the TXVSN website or contact the TXVSN Help Desk
