TEA Middle School Advanced Mathematics Automatic Enrollment Update

TEA has recently received questions regarding the process for identifying which students should be automatically enrolled in the Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program based on STAAR scores for English and Spanish testers. In response, the statewide 60th percentile rank for all Grade 5 Mathematics STAAR testers has been calculated. Based on this information, each LEA must automatically enroll in the Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program any student who earned a raw score of 25 and a scale score of 1651 on the Grade 5 Mathematics STAAR regardless of whether the student took the English language or the Spanish language assessment. This information is valid only for Spring 2024 and will be recalculated and shared with the field each year after STAAR assessments are complete. This information will also be made available on the Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program web page.

Please note that commissioner of education rules related to the Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program are expected to be effective in early July. TEA will share a link to the rules once they have been filed as adopted with the Texas Register.

Public Comment Period of IMRA Process is Open

The State Board of Education (SBOE) posted 142 instructional materials for public feedback as part of the new Instructional Materials Review and Approval (IMRA) process. The public comment period is from May 29, 2024, to August 16, 2024, and members of the public are encouraged to review instructional materials and submit written comments, report suspected factual errors, or share any suitability concerns. To see the list of materials submitted for review, access copies of the instructional materials themselves, SBOE feedback forms, and SBOE-approved IMRA rubrics, please visit sboe.texas.gov/imra.

This IMRA cycle includes full-subject, tier-one instructional materials intended for classroom-wide instruction to support all students in K–5 English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR), Spanish Language Arts and Reading (SLAR), and K–12 mathematics. Additionally, partial-subject, tier-one instructional materials for K–3 English and Spanish phonics are also up for the public to review.

All materials are being reviewed by independent teams of professional reviewers – teachers, parents and other curriculum experts – based on how well they support on-grade-level instruction of the SBOE’s curriculum standards, and they are also being evaluated based on rubrics the SBOE has developed to analyze instructional material quality and suitability.  In addition to these professional reviews, the SBOE welcomes review and feedback from all members of the public. All feedback and recommendations collected from the public will be considered alongside findings from the professional review teams at forthcoming SBOE meetings as part of the approval process.

For additional information and resources, review the SBOE press release and visit the SBOE IMRA webpage.
