TEA is committed to enhancing opportunities for stakeholder engagement. We are pleased to announce that the reading language arts team at TEA is implementing an initiative to expand information-sharing and engagement with reading language arts stakeholders across the state. Stakeholders include parents, teachers, administrators, staff members, local board members, and the general public.

It is our hope that these virtual, online meetings will allow us to connect with stakeholders to learn more about their needs and to share relevant and timely information with them. Each session will have a different informational focus related to reading language arts.

Timely Topic: English I, II, III and IV Course Sequencing

Timely Topic

To support Texas reading language arts educators and stakeholders, the reading language arts newsletter occasionally highlights a commonly asked question and response focused on a timely reading language arts topic. This edition’s timely topic question is below.

Question: Do high school English I-IV courses have to be taken in sequential order?

Answer:  Sequencing of English I, II, III and IV is not addressed by law or rule. English I, II, III and IV can be taken in any order or concurrently.

However, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for these courses were written with vertical alignment considerations. So, in many cases, student expectations (SEs) in English III and IV build upon SEs in English I and II. For example, if students take English III or IV without first taking English I and II, they may have gaps in knowledge that could hinder them from successfully mastering English III or IV.

The State Board of Education (SBOE) is accepting nominations for the 2024 Heroes for Children Award, celebrating 30 years of honoring exceptional volunteers in Texas education.

Each year, the SBOE selects 15 people, one from each member’s district, to be recognized as heroes. To be eligible for nomination, candidates must volunteer their time, effort, service, and support to public schools and students.

Nominations close on July 12, and honorees will be celebrated at the September SBOE general meeting in Austin.
