New Frontiers Public Schools Discusses Lone Star Governance at TPCSA

At the 2022 Texas Public Charter Schools Association Conference in San Antonio this month, Exemplar Cohort member New Frontiers Public Schools gave a presentation on Lone Star Governance and how the student-outcomes-focused framework helps refocus board of trustee meetings. Led by Board President Madla, Board Vice-President Rodriguez, CEO/President Segura, and Dee Ann Drummond (their Lone Star Governance Coach from the Region 20 ESC), the packed session covered implementing concise, consistent, and effective board meetings focused on student outcomes.

Deadline Has Arrived for the Required School Safety Training for School District Trustees

House Bill 690, passed by the 87th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, 2021, added Texas Education Code, §11.159(b-1), requiring the State Board of Education (SBOE) to coordinate with the Texas School Safety Center to develop training on school safety for school board trustees. In November 2021, the SBOE adopted the new school safety training. The training was first made available on TEA Learn in February 2022.

Trustees must meet the school safety training requirement by taking the SBOE-approved training every two years. Newly elected trustees who did not complete the training prior to their election have 120 days from the date of their election or appointment to complete the training. Current trustees who have not yet completed the training have until September 30, 2022, to complete the training.

The new online school safety training is available on TEA Learn at this link: SBOE School Safety Training

Trustees who complete the training receive a certificate of completion from TEA Learn. School districts must maintain verification of completion of the school safety training for each of their trustees.

If you have questions about the training, please contact a member of the TEA governance team at (512) 936-1533 or via email at schoolgovernance@tea.texas.gov.

How to Get Involved in Lone Star Governance

We have many Lone Star Governance workshops scheduled for the coming months. Several of these still have room for another participating board. Upcoming LSG workshops are advertised on the LSG home page here.

If any of these dates align with the availability of your board members and superintendent, please contact us at lsg@tea.texas.gov for more information about registering for the workshop.

This Month's Frequently Asked Question

Once a trustee completes the SBOE's required school safety training, to whom at the Texas Education Agency should we send the certificates of completion that our trustees download from TEA Learn?

While each school district is required to maintain verification of completion for each trustee, districts are not required to send certificates of completion to TEA.
