Required School Safety Training for School District Trustees Now Available on TEA Learn

House Bill 690, passed by the 87th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, 2021, added Texas Education Code, §11.159(b-1), requiring the State Board of Education (SBOE) to coordinate with the Texas School Safety Center to develop training on school safety for school board trustees. In November 2021, the SBOE adopted the new school safety training. The training was first made available on TEA Learn in February 2022.

Trustees must meet the school safety training requirement by taking the SBOE-approved training every two years. Newly elected trustees who did not complete the training prior to their election have 120 days from the date of their election or appointment to complete the training. Current trustees who have not yet completed the training have until September 30, 2022, to complete the training.

The new online school safety training is available on TEA Learn at this link: SBOE School Safety Training

Trustees who complete the training receive a certificate of completion from TEA Learn. School districts must maintain verification of completion of the school safety training for each of their trustees.

If you have questions about the training, please contact a member of the TEA governance team at (512) 936-1533 or via email at schoolgovernance@tea.texas.gov.

Meet the Newest Members of the LSG Exemplar Cohort

The Lone Star Governance (LSG) Exemplar Cohort is an intensive program designed for committed governing teams—school boards with their superintendents—dedicated to continually cultivating and sharpening their focus on one primary objective: improving student outcomes.

The LSG Exemplar Cohort is a yearlong program in which member districts are reimbursed (up to a predetermined amount) for all their LSG-related expenses.

Eight school systems have joined us as the newest members of the LSG Exemplar Cohort:

  • Betty M. Condra School
  • Edna ISD
  • Frankston ISD
  • Jarrell ISD
  • Marfa ISD
  • Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD
  • Runge ISD
  • Woodsboro ISD

We look forward to working closely with these newest members of the LSG family.

If you missed the opportunity to apply earlier this year, stay tuned. Another opportunity will be announced in the coming weeks.

Upcoming LSG Workshops

Are you interested in participating in a Lone Star Governance workshop? There is still an opportunity for districts to join workshops already planned for the coming month. Please see the list of scheduled workshops on the LSG homepage to find one you may be interested in joining.

If none of the already scheduled workshops fit your availability, please contact us at lsg@tea.texas.gov to schedule your own workshop.

This Month's Frequently Asked Question

Once all our district's trustees have completed the required school safety training on TEA Learn, how should we document that they have met the requirement?

School districts are required to maintain verification of completion for their trustees. After completing the school safety training on TEA Learn, trustees have the option to download a certificate of completion. Districts may use these certificates as proof that the training has been completed.
