Update on the Social Studies TEKS Review Process

 

Draft Recommendations for Proposed New TEKS for Kindergarten through Grade 8 and Ethnic Studies

The State Board of Education's (SBOE) social studies Work Group D met in June–July 2022 to develop recommendations for revisions to the kindergarten through grade 8 TEKS for social studies.

Work Group E also met in June–July 2022 to develop recommendations for revisions to two ethnic studies courses: African American Studies and Mexican American Studies courses. The work group also developed two new ethnic studies courses: Asian American Studies and American Indian/Native Studies.

Recommendations from Work Groups D and E are currently available for review and feedback on the 2021-2022 Social Studies TEKS Review Work Group Drafts web page.

Feedback on work group recommendations will be accepted throughout the review and revision process. When providing specific comments and recommendations, please identify the work group in the subject line of the email. For example, in the subject line, please indicate "Social Studies TEKS Review Work Group D Feedback." Please submit comments to TEA at teks@tea.texas.gov.

SBOE Special Meeting

The State Board of Education (SBOE) has scheduled a special meeting on August 1, 2022, at 8:00 a.m. to discuss the revisions to the social studies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

The SBOE will also hold a public hearing on the proposed revisions to the K-12 social studies TEKS at the August 1 special meeting. Registration to provide public testimony online opens at 8:00 a.m. (Central Time) on Thursday, July 28, and will continue through 5:00 p.m. (Central Time) on Friday, July 29. Public testimony is only in-person.

Additional information regarding registration will be  provided on the public testimony registration web page in advance of the meeting. The SBOE meeting also can be viewed via the live webcast.
