ECE Assessment Updates

Pre-K

We would like to inform early childhood stakeholders about the extension of the current Commissioner’s List of Approved Prekindergarten Instruments for use through the 2022-2023 school year in accordance with Texas Education Code (TEC), §29.169 and §28.006. A copy of the To the Administrator Addressed correspondence can be found on the TEA website.

The Commissioner’s list, with detailed information about each instrument, can be found on the Educator Resources page of the TEA website, as well as on the Data Tool Selection Guide webpage.

Kindergarten

We are pleased to announce that districts and open-enrollment charters may continue to use either the Texas Kindergarten Entry Assessment (TXKEA) by the Children's Learning Institute or mCLASS Texas by Amplify as the required beginning-of-year literacy instrument. The authorization period for mCLASS Texas and mCLASS Lectura as free, Commissioner-selected literacy screening tools for kindergarten has been extended through August 2024. mCLASS Lectura is a new dual language assessment that will be offered for free starting in the 2022-23 school year and continuing until August 2024. If you currently use mCLASS IDEL, Amplify is encouraging districts to transition to mCLASS Lectura for the 2022-2023 school year as mCLASS IDEL will discontinue at the end of the 2022-2023 school year.

To learn more about the new mCLASS Lectura dual language assessment tool, please refer to the link below!

 What is Lectura?

  • Authentic dual language assessment and instruction for K-6
  • NOT the new IDEL, brand new content based on the latest research
  • Validated for benchmark, progress monitoring and dyslexia screening

To learn more, visit the Lectura informational page.

Districts and open-enrollment charters must collect data regarding student reading proficiency using an approved tool (either from the Commissioner's List, which is currently defined as the options listed below, or selected by a district-level committee as permitted by TEC §28.006(b)). Click on an option below for more information about the free options:

mCLASS Texas (remote administration is available and it aligns with all the elements of the dyslexia handbook)

TPRI/Tejas Lee (remote administration is available and all current versions (free and fee-based) of TPRI/Tejas Lee are considered part of the Commissioner's List and their selection does not require district-level committee approval)

High-Quality Prekindergarten (HQPK) Component ECDS Submission

Local Education Agencies (LEAs) are required to submit information related to certain HQPK components into the Early Childhood Data System (ECDS) annually. The submission closes June 23, 2022, for the 2021-2022 school year. Below are links to the submission codes for the HQPK components:

  • Curriculum Code Table
  • Teacher Qualifications Code Table
  • Family Engagement Code Table (*note that the link submitted must go directly to the family engagement plan, not a general LEA webpage)
  • Program Evaluation Code Table
  • Assessment: Districts and open-enrollment charters, in the provision of high-quality, full-day prekindergarten for 4-year-old students, must collect data regarding student progress in health and wellness, language and communication, emergent literacy reading, emergent literacy writing, and mathematics at both the beginning (BOY) and end of the year (EOY) by using one or more of the tools on the Commissioner's list. This raw data is submitted to the Early Childhood Data System (ECDS) annually.
