At the November 2020 State Board of Education (SBOE) meeting, the SBOE approved for second reading and final adoption revisions to the K-12 health education and physical education Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The revisions for health education and physical education include new standards for kindergarten–grade 8, three new high school courses for health education, and three new high school courses for physical education. The new health courses will be offered for one-half credit and the new physical education courses will be offered for one-credit.
The new health education and physical education TEKS were adopted to be effective and implemented beginning with the 2022-2023 school year with an effective date of August 1, 2022. At that time, the new TEKS will replace the current TEKS in Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 115 https://texreg.sos.state.tx.us/public/readtac$ext.ViewTAC?tac_view=4&ti=19&pt=2&ch=115 and Chapter 116 https://texreg.sos.state.tx.us/public/readtac$ext.ViewTAC?tac_view=4&ti=19&pt=2&ch=116.
In the interim between now and the effective date, the new TEKS can be accessed on the Adopted State Board of Education Rules—Not Yet Effective web page: https://tea.texas.gov/about-tea/laws-and-rules/sboe-rules-tac/adopted-state-board-of-education-rules-not-yet-effective.
The current TEKS for health education and physical education must still be taught until the new TEKS become effective on August 1, 2022, and the old courses will be repealed after this date.
For questions related to the TEKS, please contact teks@tea.texas.gov.
