Newly Adopted K-8 Science Standards
At the November 2021 meeting, the State Board of Education (SBOE) approved new Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for kindergarten–grade 8.
Based on recommendations from the content advisors and Work Group A, TEA convened a separate work group in June and July 2020 to develop recommendations regarding scientific and engineering practices and the process skills in the current science TEKS. The proposed new scientific and engineering practices would replace the current process skills for kindergarten–grade 12.
The recently adopted science TEKS are scheduled for implementation beginning with the 2024–2025 school year. A copy of the newly adopted TEKS can be found here. Please note that the document reflects what the SBOE approved for second reading and final adoption and is subject to technical edits by Texas Register editors. Once the new TEKS have been filed with the Texas Register, the TEKS will become effective after 20 days and available in Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 112, Subchapters A & B, with “Adopted 2021” in the title.
Please submit any questions to TEA at teks@tea.texas.gov.
Developing a District or Campus STEM Program
The Texas Education Agency has created tools to support districts and campuses develop or expand their K-12 STEM programs. The STEM planning tools are designed to help a district target areas of need, identify the STEM model that best aligns with local programming, and develop the STEM program design.

Women in STEM Caucus
U.S. Senators Jackie Rosen (D-NV) and Shelly Capito (R-WV) recently launched the Senate bipartisan Women in STEM focused on creating more access and pathways for women and girls to participate in STEM careers. This follows the launch of the Women in STEM Caucus in the House of Representatives in early 2020 by U.S. Representatives Jackie Walorski (R-Ind), Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.), Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), and Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-Ariz.). The bipartisan House caucus was founded to increase the presence of women and underrepresented minorities in STEM.
