The
State Board of Education will hold a special called meeting on May 10 to
consider final approval of changes to the English and Spanish language arts and
reading curriculum standards for kindergarten through eighth grade.
Final
approval for the high school English and Spanish language arts and reading
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) will be considered at the June 20-23
board meeting.

The
State Board of Education in April gave final approval to streamlined science
standards for kindergarten through high school.
Streamlining
eliminates, clarifies or combines some standards without adding additional
content.
Science
is the first subject area to undergo a streamlining process.
This
action came in response to comments from teachers who felt that there were too
many standards, which made it difficult to teach all the content assigned to a
specific grade level during the course of a school year.
The
board considered about 70 amendments to the science standards during its April
meeting, and approved most of them.
After six
board discussions over a 17-month period to determine whether adjustments
should be made to the mathematics curriculum standards implemented in 2012, the
State Board of Education on April 21 voted 5-9 with one abstention to make no
changes at this time.
The
proposal considered would have removed references to mathematical process
standards from the knowledge and skills statements in the mathematics standards
for all grade levels.

Volunteers make a difference in our Texas public

For 23 years, the State Board of Education has
recognized 15 individual volunteers annually as Heroes for Children. One
volunteer is selected from each board district.

The State
Board of Education (SBOE) is currently accepting applications for the 2017
Employers for Education Excellence (EEE) Award. The annual award recognizes Texas
employers who encourage and support employee participation in school
activities.
Any Texas
employer is eligible, including private businesses, nonprofit organizations and
governmental and educational entities that meet the criteria.
The Texas Senate on March 14 unanimously confirmed the
reappointment of Donna Bahorich as chair of the State Board of Education. The
two-year appointment runs through Feb. 1, 2019.
“I’m honored that Gov.
Abbott and the Texas Senate have affirmed their confidence in me to continue to
chair the State Board of Education. Along with my fellow board members, I look
forward to continuing our efforts to strengthen curriculum standards, approve
high quality textbooks, increase transparency in both curriculum standards
development and textbooks adoption, and provide oversight to the $37 billion
Permanent School Fund,” Bahorich said.

State Board of Education member Marty Rowley of
Amarillo has been named an outstanding alumni of Eastern New Mexico University.
Rowley earned a bachelor of science in business administration from ENMU in
Portales, New Mexico. Rowley has worked
as a lawyer, pastor, and mediator since graduating from college and law school.
He currently runs his own law firm, Marty L. Rowley, P.C., in Amarillo. Rowley
was elected to the SBOE in 2012 and re-elected in 2016.
The alumni award was given by Eastern New Mexico
University Foundation and Alumni Association.
