From the Range to Competitive Shooting
For many recreational shooters, competitive shooting is a natural next step beyond the range. These organized sports build on fundamental skills such as safe firearm handling and accuracy, while introducing structured courses, scoring, and clearly defined rules. Competitive shooting emphasizes precision, consistency, and responsibility, with safety at the core of every discipline.
There are many types of competitive shooting events, ranging from precision pistol and rifle matches to dynamic, timed formats such as USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge, and long-range disciplines. Across all formats, participants are expected to follow strict safety standards and demonstrate control, awareness, and respect for the sport. a great primer on getting started is available through the National Rifle Association’s Competitive Shooting Division — they explain what kinds of matches exist and how beginners can join clubs and leagues.

What is 3-Gun?
Professional shooters Dianna and Ryan Muller explain one of the fastest-growing shooting sports in the country; the action-packed multi-gun competition commonly known as “3-gun.”
Competitors use three different firearms — a modern sporting rifle (MSR), typically a rifle built on an AR-platform; a handgun; and a shotgun. Matches generally involve courses where the shooter must move through different stages and engage targets in a variety of different positions. Each stage will generally require the use of different firearms and require the shooter to transition between them.
