Keep Hunting BIG in Texas
The big game videos below highlight how Deer and Bighorn Sheep Conservation License Plate revenue is being spent to fund wildlife management and research that helps keep hunting BIG in Texas.
TPWD is working with Texas Bighorn Society and other conservation organizations to restore desert bighorn sheep to their historic mountain ranges in the Trans-Pecos region. Since December 2010, more than 400 desert bighorn sheep have been captured and moved from surplus populations to other mountain ranges. Transplanted sheep have done quite well and have gradually expanded their range. They are equipped with GPS collars, which provide valuable data that will enhance future restoration efforts.

TPWD partnered with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, Borderlands Research Institute, Texas Tech University, and the Mule Deer Foundation in a five-year mule deer research project looking at the effect of agriculture on mule deer movements and survival in the Texas Panhandle. This project provided essential information on seasonal movements and survivorship of mule deer in relation to various habitats, along with the impacts of agriculture production on mule deer biology and habitat.

Pronghorn numbers historically declined from 2008–2012 in the Trans-Pecos region. However, restoration efforts have helped rebound the region’s population. This has only been made possible because of the hard work and dedication from many conservation partners and landowners.
