Restoring the Official State Fish

South Llano River video

The Guadalupe Bass was close to being wiped out after being threatened by loss of habitat and hybridization with non-native, introduced Smallmouth Bass. However, TPWD habitat restoration and restocking efforts have restored the official state fish to the South Llano, Blanco, and San Antonio rivers.

Strengthening Texas Rivers

Blanco River video

Massive floods in 2015 destroyed much of the natural habitat along the Blanco River. Our biologists continue to work with landowners to help re-establish trees and grasses and make the area more resilient to the effects of flooding.

Improving River Access

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has lease agreements that allow public river access across private land. Anglers and paddlers may use these leased areas for fishing and launching kayaks, canoes or other non-motorized boats.
