The Monarch Butterfly Story

How to help monarch butterflies video

The monarch butterfly is a beautiful and iconic species and one of nature’s great migration stories. This species migrates through Texas from Mexico in the spring and makes its way to the northern extremes of the U.S., into Canada. Then, they reverse this feat in the fall to spend the winter in Mexico.

This great migration is in jeopardy, with the overwintering population experiencing steep declines in the last decade due to droughts, pesticides and loss of habitat.

How you can help the monarchs and other pollinators

Our monarch specialist friends at the National Wildlife Federation offer additional ways you can help:

  1. Become a Certified Monarch Steward. Volunteers gain knowledge and skills needed to be good stewards for monarchs and all pollinators.
  2. Plant pesticide-free pollinator gardens that include native milkweeds, and native plants that flower year round.  See videos, tips, resources at Garden for Wildlife Resources
  3. Encourage your community to adopt and follow the National Wildlife Federation's Mayor's Monarch Pledge.
