Survey methods, spatial ecology, and habitats of the Western Chicken Turtle in Texas
Wednesday, March 17, 2021 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. CST
Brandon Bowers, Research Associate, Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute
Though its distribution within the eastern third of the state is widespread, the seasonal behavior, survey methods, and spatial resource requirements of Western Chicken Turtles are poorly understood in Texas. Past research suggests that its remaining habitat in Texas is under threat from increasing urbanization, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering listing the western subspecies as threatened or endangered. During this webinar, we will introduce Western Chicken Turtle survey methods, seasonal activity, habitat, and spatial resource requirements in Texas.
Brandon Bowers is a Research Associate at the Natural Resources Institute and Ph.D student at Texas A&M University. He completed a Master's Degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at Texas A&M University in 2020. He is interested in the ecology and natural history of reptile and amphibian species that rely on seasonal wetland mosaics.
