Luis

Volunteers, Partners, Friends,

We hope this message finds you well as 2020 has been quite the adventure.  Our Buffalo Soldiers program just wrapped up a second month of virtual programming utilizing Facebook Live.  We are working on getting a few of the programs from the last couple months uploaded to YouTube as well.  Thank you to those who tuned into the TxStateParkTriviaChallenge.  If you were not able to make the event no worries as we’re gearing up another opportunity this month.

During the month of June, we would like to recognize Juneteenth.  June 19, 1865 is the day General Grainger along with 1800 federal troops arrived at Galveston, Texas to read General Order No. 3 and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.  Please share with us how you plan to spend Juneteenth by posting some pictures or sharing a story to our Facebook page. We’d love to hear from you.

As always, our partners and volunteers continue to be vital in our operations and, we would like to open the opportunity for you to program alongside us on the digital frontier.  If you’re interested in conducting some online programs please contact program coordinator Luis Padilla at 512-844-3526 or Luis.padilla@tpwd.texas.gov for more information on how to get involved.

We thank you for friendships and hard work put in over the years.  We truly look forward to continuing our relationships with you all and hope to see you in person further down the trail….

Regards,

Volunteer Highlight

Our volunteer spotlight for the month of June is highlighting the family of Yolanda Johnson, Terrance Taylor Johnson, and A’Sondra Taylor- Johnson.  Yolanda and her children have volunteered with the Buffalo Soldiers program for over two years and have traveled a few hundred miles with us over that time.  From taking our Buffalo Soldier Blazing New Trails Training class, to programming at McKinney Falls in Austin Tx and Resaca De La Palmas in South Texas they, have been a tremendous addition to our program.  We salute this family and look forward to hitting the trail with them again soon.

Keep Connected

Texas Buffalo Soldiers bring history to life with stories, historical clothing, and tools.

At one of our programs, you can learn how to track an animal, fish with a cane pole or cook over a campfire. We play traditional games, use the sun to find directions, learn Native American skills, and even saddle a horse.

We make connections between history and the outdoors. Our goal is to not only share history, but to share our Story.

Follow us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram and help share our story!
