You might think that if you don't pay for a private hunting lease, own your own property or have friends who own property, that it's impossible to find a decent place to hunt at a low price. But that just ain't so.
There are more than 1 million acres of walk-in hunting lands available to you with an Annual Public Hunting Permit. These include wildlife management areas, state parks, U.S. Forest Service lands and even private lands that we've leased for your hunting enjoyment.
Access over 180 hunting areas, including 120 dove and small game areas. Most of the locations are within a 1-2-hour drive of Texas' major cities.
To find a new hunting spot, do a search by area or type of game.

Insider Tips
- Get details on every public hunting area online. You can search by area or type of game or review the full Public Hunting Lands Map Booklet (PDF).
- Take advance scouting trips to familiarize yourself with the land and find a few preferred spots. You can start scouting a week before the season opens if you have your permit.
- Avoid crowds by planning hunts midweek or after opening week and by arriving early.
- Bring a youngster hunting with you! Anyone under age 17 may access these areas for free with a permitted adult.
- Get the full outdoor experience. Many areas allow fishing, camping, hiking, nature watching, photography and equestrian use. Check the map booklet for more information.
Other Public Hunting Options
Several National Wildlife Refuges in Texas also offer hunting access. In fact, hunting is one of the priority public uses of national wildlife refuges. It's a tradition that dates to the early 1900s.
